Over 50 nations met in a Collaborative Framework on Green Hydrogen, co-facilitated by Morocco and the European Commission, as part of IRENA’s October Council, to debate how to translate industry suggestions for policymakers into tangible actions to enhance green hydrogen internationally.
The new Enabling Measures Roadmap for Green Hydrogen, developed by IRENA in collaboration with the World Economic Forum (WEF), will serve as a platform for furthering public-private communication. IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera opened the conference by emphasizing the need of moving from commitment to action: “COP26 is just days away, and we need to be clear about the severity of the issue and the scope of work and investment required to accomplish our climate targets.”
“Today, we provide a Roadmap that can aid governments in taking action by executing a series of initiatives to create green hydrogen on a national and regional level,” La Camera stated. The proposed European Union Roadmap is the first of a planned series of Roadmaps for countries throughout the world.
The Roadmap’s overall goal is to demonstrate the top enabling steps that private business advises for scaling up green hydrogen and establishing international trade. It was created as a toolkit for policymakers to use in order to identify the main activities needed to enable the development of a hydrogen market in their particular nation.
“Sending a strong signal from the private sector side on their desire to allow ambitious green hydrogen ambitions,” said Roberto Bocca, WEF’s Head of Shaping the Future of Energy & Materials. They now require government help to turn Roadmaps into a useful tool for policymakers and a viable roadmap to green hydrogen.”
Over months, the enabling measures process was developed in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and private sector stakeholders from various parts of the hydrogen industry, including hydrogen production, consumption, transportation, market exchange, and finance, to capture the real-time challenges and solutions to developing a new market for green hydrogen. At COP 26, the full Green Hydrogen Roadmap for Europe and Japan will be unveiled as a key communication tool for all policymakers.
