Two hydrogen-production projects are currently being investigated in the Sakhalin region: Air Liquid and Rosatom in Sakhalin, as well as the Danish Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners on the northern Kuril island of Shumshu.
According to Governor Valery Limarenko, the Danes plan to produce 1.5 GW of wind energy and 120 thousand tons of hydrogen per year and sell it to Japan, and as Shumshu is not one of the “disputed islands,” there should be no issues with cooperation.
They’re looking for a lease on Shumshu Island because the wind is better there for building a power plant. The investor requests land for exploration purposes, such as where to place electric park meters, and so on. This does not guarantee that the project will go ahead, but significant conversations are underway, and I will inform the country’s leadership of this. This project might cost somewhere between $ 2 billion and $ 2.5 billion, according to Valery Limarenko.
The project to process Gazprom’s gas is now undergoing a feasibility study (FS), which is expected to be finished by the end of 2021. The annual volume is predicted to be 200 million cubic meters. The first 30 thousand tons of hydrogen are expected to be sold in 2025, according to the region’s leader. The sum invested is projected to be over 18 billion rubles.
