Namibia’s first green hydrogen plant launched

With the help of CMB.TECH and the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group, Namibia’s first green hydrogen production plant was launched.

It will be built in the Erongo region, a demonstration center for hydrogen applications. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2022 and be completed by the end of 2023. A larger production facility, possibly fueled by ammonia, may be built in a second phase based on the results of the demonstration plant.

Together with CMB.TECH, the O&L Group is launching Cleanergy Namibia as a joint venture to build a green hydrogen production plant and demonstration hub in Namibia. This is the company’s first project in Namibia and on the continent. An ultimate goal is to produce and distribute green hydrogen generated by solar power to heavy-duty vehicles and machinery such as trucks and locomotives. With the O&L Group’s extensive Namibian presence and expertise in renewable energy park development, as well as CMB.TECH’s hydrogen and industrial know-how, this unique project is in good hands.

“Namibia is a growing hub when it comes to the generation of renewable energy, whether that be through solar, wind or hydroelectric power, and this is what makes our country optimally positioned to explore the generation of green hydrogen, or hydrogen that is generated using renewable electricity,” said Sven Thieme – Executive Chairman of the O&L Group.

Beyond the initial production and demonstration plant, Cleanergy Namibia’s ambitions are far greater. On top of the knowledge gained during the construction of the hydrogen plant, Cleanergy intends to build a much larger, green hydrogen and ammonia factory in Namibia. Cleanergy Namibia aims to show that green hydrogen projects are already a reality by starting the hydrogen production plant in 2022.

With the help of institutions of higher learning, Cleanergy Namibia supports the development of a green hydrogen research center that will serve as a powerful knowledge base to train and educate Namibians and develop local expertise so that Namibia can become a global energy leader. For this innovative project, the company is working with local, regional, and national governments as well as end-users who are interested in being a part of the process.
