The European Union (EU) and Egypt are working on hydrogen cooperation, which they want to complete by the end of the year, according to Kadri Simson, the European Commissioner for Energy.
Simpson said she met with Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi for the first time to discuss renewable energy and hydrogen cooperation.
According to a news release from the EU, EU President Ursula von der Leyen met with Egyptian President El Sisi in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss climate, energy, and green transition cooperation.
“The EU and Egypt will establish a Mediterranean Hydrogen Partnership to promote investments in renewable electricity generation, the strengthening, and extension of electricity grids, including trans-Mediterranean interconnectors, the production of renewables and low-carbon hydrogen, and the construction of storage, transportation, and distribution infrastructure,” according to the statement.
On Wednesday, the EU concluded a trilateral deal with Egypt and Israel for the reliable supply of natural gas to Europe.
The initiatives follow Europe’s attempts to shift away from Russian fossil fuels and toward more trustworthy sources, according to the statement.
