Finland: Joint venture builds 200 MW green hydrogen and e-methane plant

A 200 megawatt (MW) total output hydrogen and green methane power plant is being built in Finland. Green hydrogen/e-methane plant with an output of up to 200 MW.

The 600 MW wind farm portfolio provides the green power needed to run the electrolyzer. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the hydrogen/e-methane plant is expected to be put into operation. A joint venture between CPC Finland and Prime Green Energy Infrastructure Fund (PGEIF), a fund administered by Prime Capital AG, is building the project (PCAG).

Electricity for the manufacturing of hydrogen and e-methane is provided by a 600 MW wind farm portfolio.

A joint venture between CPC Finland Oy and PGEIF has been formed for the development, building, and operation of a green hydrogen/e-methane plant with a capacity of up to 200 MW. The hydrogen factory is situated in the southwestern Finnish region of Ostrobothnia, in the village of Karhusaari, Kristinestad. The approval procedure is already underway and should take 18 to 24 months to complete. The plant’s construction is anticipated to begin in 2024. The facility is expected to start operating in the fourth quarter of 2025 after a 12-month building phase.

Using at least 80% of the company’s own production sources, the green power for the hydrogen/e-methane generation should mostly originate from those sources. Consequently, the deal also includes a portfolio of wind farms from CPC Finland Oy with a 600 MW capacity that will provide electricity for hydrogen electrolysis through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). In addition to offering technical and financial management throughout the operation, CPC Finland Oy will provide EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Development) services for the wind farms during their construction.
