The first green hydrogen power plant in Africa, built by French company HDF Energy, is slated to begin generating electricity in Namibia by 2024.

When completed, the 3.1 billion Namibian dollar ($181.25 million) Swakopmund project will increase the country’s access to clean electricity by supplying it continuously throughout the year, 24 hours a day.

Hydrogen is considered “green” when it is produced using renewable energy and is important for decarbonizing industry, even if the technology is still in its infancy and is still somewhat expensive. In the project, electrolysers will be powered by 85 MW of solar panels to produce hydrogen that can be stored.

Additionally, HDF Energy is interested in developing additional projects in Africa and other continents.
