SK Ecoplant is set to play a pivotal role in a groundbreaking global project for the commercialization of green hydrogen.
The company recently signed an investment agreement with Canada’s World Energy GHâ‚‚, marking a significant milestone since SK Ecoplant’s transformation into an environmentally focused entity.
The $45.6 billion (1 trillion won) project, known as the “New Geohonic Green Hydrogen Phase 3 Project,” aims to produce hydrogen through wind power generation on the island of Newfoundland in eastern Canada. SK Ecoplant will participate in the project’s first phase, which represents a crucial step towards achieving global-scale green hydrogen production.
The core objective of the initiative is to utilize wind-generated electricity to extract green hydrogen from water through electrolysis, eliminating carbon emissions. The extracted green hydrogen will then be converted into green ammonia and transported to various continents, including Europe.
To realize this ambitious goal, the project will involve the construction of approximately 1 GW of onshore wind power generation capacity. Additionally, advanced technologies such as solid oxide water electrolyzers (SOEC) and polymer electrolyte water electrolyzers (PEMEC) with a combined capacity of 600 MW will be employed to facilitate green hydrogen production. Furthermore, a green ammonia plant will be established to convert the generated green hydrogen into approximately 2,025.3 tons of green ammonia annually by 2025.
SK Ecoplant’s involvement in the project is significant, as the company has secured an exclusive order worth $15.2 billion (5000 trillion won). Their responsibilities encompass the overall project’s basic design (Front-End Engineering Design), the construction of SOEC and PEMEC units, and the review of the comprehensive business plan. SK Eco Engineering, a subsidiary, will collaborate on the plant design, procurement, and construction (EPC) process for converting green hydrogen into green ammonia. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding SK Ecoplant’s potential participation in the EPC phase of wind farms.
The commercial production of green hydrogen is anticipated to commence in March 2026, followed by green ammonia production in March 2027. Once operational, this groundbreaking project has the potential to revolutionize the global energy landscape, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the transition towards a more sustainable future.
