Kent, a prominent engineering company specializing in the energy, renewables, and low-carbon sectors, has been selected as the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contractor for Grenian Hydrogen’s six electrolytic hydrogen projects.
Grenian Hydrogen, a joint venture between Progressive Energy, Statkraft, and Foresight, has secured funding from the UK Government Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) Net Zero Hydrogen Fund and Hydrogen Business model to develop green hydrogen projects within the HyNet cluster in North-West England and North Wales.
As part of the agreement, Kent will conduct a single FEED study covering all six project sites. The goal is to reach an AACE class 3 estimate, enabling final investment decisions and project execution. The projects will incorporate PEM electrolysers, with Kent as the FEED contractor responsible for integrating the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) technology design into complete hydrogen production, storage, and delivery facilities.
Matt Wills, Kent Market Director Low Carbon, expressed the company’s commitment to meeting the strict budget and tight timeline set by the DESNZ funding requirements. Leveraging their extensive expertise in hydrogen technology, gained through years of early design and FEED work on hydrogen projects like HyNet, Kent aims to develop a standardized design and layout that ensures cost savings through replicability across the portfolio of projects. Wills emphasized the significance of this cluster of projects for the future viability of green hydrogen, expressing pride in Kent’s role in this endeavor.
The green hydrogen sites will vary in scale, with production capacities ranging from 10MW to 30MW for 100% fuel switching or blending. They will be located at six different sites, including the Protos Energy Park and large manufacturing plants in St Helens, Stretford, Middlewich, and Winnington.
