Senator Chuck Schumer is advocating for the selection of the Northeast Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub by the Department of Energy (DOE) as the winner of a $1.25 billion competition.
During his visit to the Plug Rochester Gigafactory, Schumer highlighted the collaborative efforts of seven states in the Northeastern US, including Upstate New York, to establish the region as a leading hub for green hydrogen production.
The Northeast has been making significant strides in advancing green hydrogen energy, with Plug’s green hydrogen Gigafactory and the construction of North America’s largest green hydrogen production facility in Western New York. Senator Schumer praised Rochester’s pivotal role in spearheading innovative research that harnesses the potential of water to produce carbon-free fuel cells and feedstocks.
The DOE’s $1.25 billion hydrogen hub competition was announced as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure and Jobs Act. Senator Schumer emphasized the importance of green hydrogen in meeting global energy demands and expressed his desire for New York to lead the way in bringing this technology to the world. Rochester’s skilled workforce, renowned research institutions, and access to renewable energy resources position it uniquely to drive the federal government’s efforts in establishing the nation’s prominence in clean hydrogen production and combatting climate change.
In April, New York, New Jersey, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, and Massachusetts collaborated to submit a joint request to the DOE, seeking $1.25 billion in federal hydrogen funding. This collective effort demonstrates the region’s determination to foster clean energy development and establish the Northeast as a frontrunner in the clean hydrogen revolution.
