Mitsubishi Power Americas has delivered two cutting-edge hydrogen-ready gas turbines to the Intermountain Power Project (IPP) Renewed in Delta, Utah.

With plans to blend 30% hydrogen fuel at startup in 2025 and reach 100% hydrogen by 2045, the project aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions and pave the way for cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions in the region. This innovative endeavor, in collaboration with the Intermountain Power Agency (IPA), is a shining example of how technological advancements and strategic partnerships can accelerate the path towards a net-zero emission future.

The Intermountain Power Project (IPP) Renewed, situated in Delta, Utah, is set to transform the landscape of power generation in the region. With the delivery of two M501JAC hydrogen-ready gas turbines from Mitsubishi Power Americas, the project is poised to become a trailblazer in the quest for cleaner, more sustainable energy.

At the heart of the project lies the utilization of hydrogen as a clean and green energy carrier. The two gas turbines are designed to operate on a 30% hydrogen fuel blend at startup, with the goal of transitioning to 100% hydrogen by 2045. This ambitious endeavor holds the potential to reduce carbon emissions by over 75% compared to IPP’s current operations.

Mitsubishi Power and Magnum Development’s planned Advanced Clean Energy Storage project (ACES Delta Hub) will play a pivotal role in supplying hydrogen to the turbines. This project will leverage renewable energy to power electrolysers, producing green hydrogen at the ACES Delta hub. The hydrogen will be stored in two underground salt caverns with a capacity of up to 150,000MWh of energy. A well-designed pipeline will transport the energy carrier from the ACES Delta hub to the IPP project’s J-Class turbines, ensuring a seamless and efficient supply chain.

The integration of these highly-flexible J-Class gas turbines marks a significant milestone for the IPP Renewed project. By bringing together the right partners and cutting-edge capabilities, the project is paving the way for a cleaner and dispatchable energy footprint in the region. With a commitment to environmental stewardship and the pursuit of net-zero emissions, IPP Renewed sets an example for other energy initiatives to follow.

The successful delivery of the two state-of-the-art gas turbines is a testament to the power of collaboration between Mitsubishi Power Americas and the Intermountain Power Agency (IPA). This fruitful partnership exemplifies how the right capabilities and expertise can drive the emergence of essential renewable energy infrastructures, propelling the country towards a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly future.
