Toll Group has taken a leap in adopting cutting-edge green technology by introducing its first hydrogen-powered long haul truck in China.

As part of its broader sustainability strategy, the global logistics company aims to revolutionize its transportation fleet, aiming to transition its entire fleet of prime movers to hydrogen vehicles in China over the next two years. The introduction of hydrogen-powered long-distance trucks marks a pivotal step towards reducing carbon emissions and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Toll Group’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its adoption of advanced technologies and sustainable practices. The new hydrogen-powered long haul truck, manufactured by Foton Motors, is deployed for deliveries between warehouses in Shanghai. Capable of traveling 300 kilometers per trip, this innovative prime mover has the potential to save up to 149 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, providing a significant environmental impact. By complementing its battery-electric last mile fleet, Toll Group aims to offer a holistic sustainable transportation solution for its customers in China, supporting their carbon emission reduction efforts.

Hydrogen emerges as a game-changer in the quest to decarbonize long-distance, heavy transport fleets. Toll Group recognizes the immense potential of hydrogen in reducing emissions across key countries in its global logistics network. With hydrogen refueling infrastructure set to develop across China, the company is poised to transition its full fleet of prime movers to hydrogen vehicles within a short timeframe.

Toll Group’s dedication to sustainable transportation extends beyond China. In Australia, the company has taken substantial steps towards a zero-emission fleet by investing in two hydrogen-powered electric prime movers. This visionary project, in partnership with Viva Energy, is envisioned as a catalyst for a future network of hydrogen refueling stations from Geelong to Sydney and Brisbane. Supported by a $22.8 million grant from the federally funded Advancing Renewables Program and additional contributions from the Victorian Government, this initiative showcases Toll Group’s commitment to advancing sustainable practices on a global scale.

Toll Group’s efforts to transition its last mile fleet in China to battery-electric vehicles before 2030 align seamlessly with local government’s environmental and sustainability goals. By investing in zero-emission technologies, Toll Group not only sets a benchmark for the logistics industry but also takes a leading role in driving positive change towards a sustainable future.
