Norwegian companies Norsk e-Fuel and Gen2 Energy have signed an agreement to supply green hydrogen for the production of sustainable aviation fuels in Mosjøen, Norway.
This partnership aims to revolutionize the aviation industry by fostering the production of fossil-free fuels, and the companies plan to establish production facilities on adjacent plots at Nesbruket industrial site in Mosjøen.
The agreement outlines Gen2 Energy’s role in supplying green hydrogen to Norsk e-Fuel, which will utilize it as a feedstock for the production of sustainable aviation fuels. The proposed production facilities at Nesbruket industrial site encompass two projects led by Gen2 Energy. The first, Nesbruket plant 1, geared towards exporting green hydrogen to off-takers in Europe, is progressing towards a planned investment decision later this year. The second project, Nesbruket plant 2, involves scaling up production capacity for the supply of green hydrogen to Norsk e-Fuel.
A significant aspect of the collaboration is the joint project development of hydrogen produced at the Nesbruket plant 2 for Norsk e-Fuel. Both companies will engage in close cooperation and coordination to ensure the success of the projects before the actual exchange of hydrogen begins. Lars Bjørn Larsen, CCO of Norsk e-Fuel, emphasizes the strategic nature of partnerships like this, fostering innovation, efficient resource utilization, sustainable land use optimization, and cost efficiency.
Andreas Ekker, SVP Global Sales in Gen2 Energy, adds, “It is a good match for us to be part of the e-fuel journey in Mosjøen through this partnership with Norsk e-Fuel.” He highlights the synergy derived from Gen2 Energy’s experience in hydrogen production and its role in supplying hydrogen efficiently to Norsk e-Fuel.
The collaboration allows both companies to maximize synergies, develop joint infrastructures and value chains. The short hydrogen supply routes will enable Gen2 Energy to optimize production cost efficiency, while Norsk e-Fuel can utilize its land and power effectively, doubling the initially planned production volume from 25 million to 50 million liters per year. This substantial increase will result in enough e-Fuel to fly 1.7 million people from Oslo to Bodø annually without relying on fossil fuels.
This partnership signifies a crucial step towards achieving fossil-free aviation, aligning with Norway’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. The collaborative efforts of Norsk e-Fuel and Gen2 Energy are poised to contribute significantly to transforming the aviation industry and reducing its environmental footprint. As the aviation sector faces increasing pressure to adopt greener alternatives, this initiative stands as a beacon for sustainable practices and innovation in the skies.
