Empire State Development (ESD) recently revealed that Toyota Material Handling North America (TMHNA) will establish an advanced energy storage solutions research and development (R&D) center in Henrietta.

The facilitywill focus on developing, prototyping, and testing cutting-edge energy storage technologies, including lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells. This move is part of TMHNA’s initiative to drive alternative energy applications for the lift truck industry and advance sustainable technology. The project is expected to create up to 40 new jobs, further contributing to the state’s green economy efforts.

Toyota Material Handling North America, which includes Toyota Material Handling and The Raymond Corporation, boasts a rich history of 150 years in the industry. The company is renowned for providing total material handling solutions, encompassing forklifts, energy solutions, and automation technology. TMHNA has been a pioneer in developing alternative energy solutions and recently achieved a milestone by establishing UL certification for an integrated lithium-ion battery and forklift solution in the U.S.

ESD is supporting the project by offering up to $1.5 million through the Excelsior Jobs Tax Credit program. Additionally, the County of Monroe Industrial Development Agency and Greater Rochester Enterprise have extended their support to facilitate the project. With a total project cost exceeding $2 million, the establishment of the R&D facility in the Finger Lakes region showcases the area’s reputation for top-tier talent and innovative technology base, making it an ideal location for TMHNA’s advanced energy storage solutions research.

Local representatives including State Senator Jeremy Cooney and State Assemblymember Harry Bronson lauded the initiative, highlighting its significance in driving advanced manufacturing, technology sectors, and sustainable energy growth in Monroe County. The decision to establish the facility in Henrietta has been met with enthusiasm from various stakeholders, recognizing the region’s potential as a hub for sustainable energy innovation. The venture aligns with the town’s efforts towards sustainable energy, complementing existing initiatives such as the upgrade to energy-efficient LED streetlights and collaborations with research institutions.
