In an interview with Professor David Cebon, a mechanical engineering expert with a focus on transportation, we delved into the multifaceted world of hydrogen energy.

As a prominent figure in the Hydrogen Science Coalition, Professor Cebon provided a critical perspective on the role of hydrogen in our energy future, emphasizing evidence-based insights and addressing several key issues.

WATCH THE INTERVIEW

Professor Cebon underscored the pivotal role of green hydrogen in the quest for decarbonization. Green hydrogen, produced exclusively from renewable electricity, is crucial for reducing carbon emissions. However, he stressed that existing hydrogen applications must first transition to green hydrogen before exploring new applications. This transition is essential to ensure that the environmental benefits of green hydrogen are maximized.

The interview also touched on the economic and environmental implications of hydrogen infrastructure. Professor Cebon pointed out that establishing hydrogen infrastructure incurs significant costs and energy inefficiencies compared to battery charging stations.

Looking forward, Professor Cebon recommended focusing green hydrogen on specific applications such as fertilizer and steel manufacturing rather than using it for heating or vehicles. He emphasized the importance of producing hydrogen at centralized locations rather than attempting widespread distribution, which aligns with his views on the need for efficient and targeted approaches in the hydrogen sector.
