Yara: Green Hydrogen on Hold, CCS in Focus

Yara International, a global leader in agricultural products and solutions, is revisiting carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology in Porsgrunn, Norway.

This shift comes six years after the company initially abandoned its CCS plans. Magnus Ankarstrand, head of Yara Clean Ammonia, confirmed that their ambitious goals for Herøya remain intact, even as the large-scale production of green hydrogen has been suspended.

Yara’s Pivot to Carbon Capture

Yara had placed significant bets on green hydrogen, a cleaner alternative produced using renewable energy sources. However, the recent decision to put these plans on hold does not signify a retreat from environmental responsibility. Instead, Yara is refocusing its efforts on CCS, a technology that captures carbon dioxide emissions produced from industrial processes, preventing them from entering the atmosphere.

Sustaining Ambition, Changing Tactics

Magnus Ankarstrand emphasized that Yara’s environmental goals for Herøya are steadfast. “Our ambition to lead in sustainability remains,” Ankarstrand said. The company believes CCS offers a viable path to substantial emission reductions, aligning with global climate targets. This renewed interest in CCS demonstrates Yara’s adaptability and commitment to innovation in its pursuit of sustainability.

A Strategic Decision

The decision to revisit CCS technology was not taken lightly. It reflects Yara’s strategic assessment of current technological and market conditions. The scalability and economic feasibility of green hydrogen production have proven challenging under existing frameworks. By contrast, CCS offers a more immediate and scalable solution for reducing greenhouse gases.

Community and Economic Impact

Reinvigorating CCS projects in Porsgrunn is expected to have considerable local economic impacts. It will likely create new jobs and invigorate local industry, contributing to the region’s economic resilience. Moreover, successful CCS implementation could position Norway as a leader in carbon management technologies globally.
