Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has embarked on an ambitious green hydrogen project in Northern Germany, launching Project Anker alongside partner Friesen Elektra Green Energy AG.
This initiative will be located in Sande, with an initial electrolysis capacity of 400 MW, expected to double to 800 MW in the future.
Near Wilhelmshaven, Project Anker is strategically positioned close to Germany’s future hydrogen core network. It aims to produce 80,000 tons of green hydrogen each year, benefiting pivotal industries like steel and chemicals, as well as transport. The project is also set to enhance the regional economy of Lower Saxony through job creation and community engagement.
The facility will leverage renewable energy sources such as offshore and onshore wind and solar. By replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen, it anticipates cutting CO2 emissions by 2.4 million tons annually, equivalent to the emissions from approximately 340,000 households.
CIP’s Energy Transition Fund I, the largest greenfield green hydrogen fund globally, has assembled a commanding portfolio of Power-to-X projects, totaling around 6.5 GW of electrolyser capacity worldwide. CIP, established in 2012, is recognized as a leading fund manager in greenfield renewable energy investments, especially offshore wind, managing 12 funds with EUR 31 billion raised from over 180 institutional investors.
