Metacon Expands Electrolysis Manufacturing Rights in Strategic PERIC Partnership

Metacon, through its subsidiary Metacon Technology AB, has strengthened its partnership with PERIC Hydrogen Technologies Co., Ltd. by securing additional manufacturing rights under a newly signed Supplementary Agreement.

This expansion allows Metacon not only to produce full electrolysis systems but also to manufacture the critical “stacks”—the core modules responsible for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. The agreement extends the initial five-year license period to eight years, signaling confidence in long-term collaboration. Importantly, PERIC has never granted a similar partnership outside China, positioning Metacon in an exclusive market segment.

The addition of stack manufacturing rights introduces a new aftermarket opportunity for Metacon. These modules are designed for periodic regeneration, enabling a recurring revenue model that aligns with industry shifts toward cost-optimized hydrogen production. With European industrial players increasingly investing in on-site hydrogen generation, Metacon’s ability to provide both complete systems and replaceable core components could enhance its competitiveness against established OEMs.

Metacon’s strategy focuses on scaling electrolysis technology for high-demand industrial sectors, including fossil-free steel production, green ammonia, and electrofuels. PERIC’s expertise in pressurized stacks—now reaching capacities of 5 MW, 10 MW, and 15 MW—offers a significant advantage for large-scale applications. Larger stacks not only improve cost efficiency but also simplify plant layouts, which is critical for industries requiring high hydrogen volumes.

Under the agreement, Metacon will adapt PERIC’s core components to meet stringent European regulatory and manufacturing standards. The company aims to integrate locally sourced components into its electrolysis systems, aligning with sustainability objectives and ensuring a resilient supply chain. PERIC has also expressed willingness to allocate additional production capacity to Metacon on a case-by-case basis, potentially enabling broader market expansion beyond Europe.

With PERIC targeting 6.5 GW of production capacity in China by 2025, its partnership with Metacon positions both companies to address rising demand in global hydrogen markets. The agreement offers Metacon an accelerated path to market entry with limited upfront investment, a crucial factor as competition in the electrolyzer sector intensifies.
