Aberdeen, known for its role in the energy industry, is set to further its commitment to sustainable practices with the approval of plans for a new hydrogen plant.

This joint venture between the city council and oil giant bp aims to produce hydrogen gas, a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels, using power generated from a new solar farm. The project, which positions Aberdeen as a pioneering hydrogen city, seeks to foster a climate-positive environment, drive inclusive growth, and establish a hydrogen supply chain. With the capacity to fuel 25 buses daily, this development marks a significant step toward a greener future.

Councillors in Aberdeen have given the green light to the plans, paving the way for the construction of a hydrogen plant capable of filling 25 buses with clean fuel each day. The collaboration between the city council and bp signifies a shared commitment to the energy transition and the creation of a sustainable hydrogen supply chain. The project’s first production is scheduled to commence in 2025, aiming to deliver over 800 kilograms of hydrogen daily, meeting the fuel demands of the designated buses and other fleet vehicles.

The proposed site for the hydrogen plant is Hareness Road, strategically chosen to facilitate efficient distribution and refueling operations. Simultaneously, a new solar farm will be constructed on the former Ness landfill site, generating the renewable power necessary for hydrogen production. The two sites will be interconnected by an underground grid connection, ensuring a seamless flow of clean energy.

Dr. Oliver Taylor, the Chief Executive for bpAHEL, expressed confidence in the project’s potential to solidify Aberdeen’s position as a pioneering hydrogen city. By embracing hydrogen as a sustainable energy source, the city aims to spearhead the energy transition, reducing carbon emissions and driving inclusive growth. The initiative aligns with the shared vision of bp and Aberdeen City Council to create a climate-positive city that embraces a hydrogen supply chain while fostering skill development and delivering wider community benefits.

One of the primary objectives of the Aberdeen Hydrogen Plant is to stimulate demand for hydrogen as a fuel source. By collaborating with fleets in and around the city, the project aims to showcase the viability and advantages of hydrogen-powered vehicles. Additionally, through the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub program, the initiative seeks to empower the people and businesses of Aberdeen to capture value from the ongoing energy transition. This multifaceted approach encompasses economic, environmental, and social aspects, making Aberdeen a model for sustainable development.

While the Aberdeen hydrogen project shows great promise, there are challenges to address. The establishment of a robust hydrogen supply chain, including production, storage, and distribution infrastructure, requires careful planning and investment. Additionally, ensuring the affordability and accessibility of hydrogen fuel is vital to encourage widespread adoption. However, with collaborative efforts between public and private sectors, along with the commitment of industry leaders like bp, Aberdeen has the opportunity to overcome these challenges and lead the way in the transition to clean energy.
