Advent Technologies Holdings, Inc., an innovator in the fuel cell and hydrogen technology space, is pleased to announce that it is currently upgrading Globe Telecom, Inc.’s (Globe) rooftop sites in the Philippines with 10kW SereneU fuel cell systems, enabling Globe to meet its ambitious CO2 emission reduction targets.
Globe intends to minimize carbon emissions across its network by deploying Advent’s SereneU fuel cells, consuming cleaner fuel in fewer quantities, achieving lower emissions, and maintaining energy-efficient heat removal.
Morten Hougaard Sørensen, Senior Vice President, Advent Technologies A/S, said, “We have been working with Globe since the beginning of their transition to greener operations, incorporating the use of fuel cells in their cell sites for both rural and urban areas, as well as their ongoing upgrades for 5G networks.”
SereneU fuel cells emit fewer pollutants than conventional generator sets and operate quietly, resulting in a system with a low impact on surrounding areas and people. Depending on the fuels utilized, the systems can achieve near-zero CO2 emissions while also being more convenient to store and transport. SereneU systems from Advent also offer a better temperature and environmental tolerance, ensuring constant backup power and increased resilience against natural disasters like as typhoons, monsoon rains, and even extended dry seasons.
Dr. Vasilis Gregoriou, Advent’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, stated, “We see Globe as a highly committed partner, not only to the mission of transitioning to green technologies, but also in establishing their independent organizational know-how and technical expertise to lead projects, install and operate fuel cells. We are happy to be a part of their mission, as the process and results of our collaboration grow stronger and stronger.”
Globe achieves various competitive advantages through its green transition by utilizing fuel cells. Globe not only complies with rules and its own objectives for best environmental practices, but also secures several competitive benefits. Globe is the first and presently only Philippine firm to pledge to Business Ambition for 1.5 degrees Celsius in June 2021, formally joining the #RacetoZero Campaign as a participant.
Globe’s commitment to setting science-based targets and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 aligns with the Paris Agreement and the #RacetoZero. The Paris Agreement’s goal is to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2050. Race to Zero is a United Nations-backed worldwide movement mobilizing non-state stakeholders to take decisive and rapid action to halve global emissions by 2030 and achieve a healthier, more equitable zero-carbon world by 2050.
Globe’s green transition initiatives reflect the company’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12 “Sustainable Consumption and Production”—which focuses on achieving economic growth and sustainable development while drastically reducing the ecological footprint. It is also about divorcing economic growth from environmental deterioration, enhancing resource efficiency, and promoting sustainable lifestyles through a shift in how things and resources are produced and consumed. Finally, Globe endorses SDG 13 “Climate Action” in order to take immediate action to address climate change and its adverse effects on people’s lives and livelihoods as a result of climate emergencies.
Globe President and Chief Executive Officer, Ernest Cu, said, “In support of the Race to Zero global campaign, Globe continues to innovate and collaborate with partners to integrate sustainability and champion energy efficiency throughout the entire organization. Our partnership with Advent in implementing renewable energy solutions has led us to achieve great things in our sustainability journey. Through our continued efforts, we will further shift Globe’s energy reliance towards renewable sources and decarbonized operations.”
