The Spanish Hydrogen Association (AeH2) has established a strategic alliance with NLHydrogen, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that aspires to propel the development of hydrogen energy and fuel cells in both Spain and the Netherlands.

The cooperation promises substantial benefits at a market level, with the intent to stimulate the evolution and adoption of hydrogen-related technologies. It’s not just an industry partnership; it also aims to foster collaboration between governments, universities, and research centers in both nations. This is set to be achieved through a series of joint activities, information exchanges, and participation in relevant events. The ultimate goal is to make strides toward a more sustainable and lower-carbon economy.

Regulatory bodies at both national and European levels have recently been advocating hydrogen technologies as a potential solution for transition and decarbonization. In a favorable context of growing industry interest and substantial investment in hydrogen-related technologies, this has led to substantial growth in the sector. The burgeoning business, scientific, and industrial networks at the national and international levels reflect the increasing recognition of the opportunities and benefits of using hydrogen as a clean, sustainable energy vector.

In a noteworthy event, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, during his state visit to Spain, visited the Iberdrola hydrogen plant in Puertollano and the National Hydrogen Center (CNH2). The agenda of his visit was underscored by green hydrogen, and he was accompanied by His Majesty King Felipe VI.

The symposium, titled “The Contribution of hydrogen valleys to the decarbonization of Europe,” welcomed numerous high-profile attendees. The Ambassador of the Netherlands, Roel Nieuwenkamp, the Minister for the Energy Transition and the Demographic Challenge Teresa Ribera, the Dutch Minister of Energy and Climate Rob Jetten, the President of the AeH2, Javier Brey, the President of NLHydrogen, Alice Krekt, were among the dignitaries present.

The discussion centered on the progress made in hydrogen valleys and the crucial role this energy source plays in the decarbonization of the aviation sector. The need for a close collaboration between Spain and the Netherlands to achieve the decarbonization of transport and aviation was also highlighted.

The visit facilitated networking opportunities for Spanish and Dutch companies and organizations, presenting their projects and initiatives related to green hydrogen. This state visit fortifies the collaborative ties between Spain and the Netherlands in renewable energy and sustainable hydrogen production, emphasizing the commitment of both nations toward a cleaner and more sustainable future.
