Alcori has joined forces with NLI Elektrosystemer to contribute to the construction of a prototype hydrogen refinery in Porsgrunn. This innovative venture, known as the “Skrei” project, provides a leap forward in the production of Green ammonia through the utilization of excess power generated from renewable sources.

The project has brought together industry giants like Yara, Linde, ITM, Suez, Silica, Danfoss, and ABB to create a unique hydrogen production facility.

The primary objective of the Skrei project is to establish a hydrogen refinery that operates on the surplus power generated by renewable energy sources. The production of Green ammonia hinges on redirecting additional power, derived from hydropower plants, solar panels, wind turbines, and other renewable sources, to facilitate the electrolysis process, converting water into hydrogen.

The collaborative effort of major companies such as Yara, Linde, ITM, Suez, Silica, Danfoss, and ABB underscores the significance of the Skrei project in the industry. By pooling together their expertise, these companies aim to create a hydrogen refinery that sets new standards in efficiency, sustainability, and safety.

The Skrei project demands substantial power, with the plant having the capacity to handle about 24MW in total. To accommodate this requirement, the project necessitated the establishment of dedicated high voltage lines, substations, distribution networks, and control rooms.

Hydrogen, known for its explosive nature, posed a unique challenge to the installation process. Alcori had to adhere strictly to EX regulations to ensure the safety of the installation and testing procedures. Managing the risks associated with handling one of the most explosive gases used in the industry required meticulous planning and execution.

The Skrei project underscores Alcori’s pivotal role in advancing hydrogen projects and highlights its availability to contractors seeking expertise in navigating the complexities of such innovative and safety-critical endeavors.
