For the next phase of the FCH2RAIL project, Toyota has built, tested, and delivered six fuel cell modules. The Gen2 technology in these modules provides more power and density in a smaller package. The flat module configuration was chosen because it allowed for the most efficient integration into the roof of the demonstration train. Emission-free bi-mode trains, which combine normal track use with emission-free rail travel without overhead lines, were pioneered by the FCH2RAIL project, launched in January 2021. As part of a demonstration bi-mode train, the FCH2Rail consortium is developing a Fuel Cell Hybrid Power Pack. To date, CNH2…

Spain has proposed to lead the production of green hydrogen in Europe by 2030, with more than 50 percent of the total in the EU, making it a reality. The first plant in the country, promoted by Acciona Energa and Enagas, was put into operation in Mallorca three weeks ago and will generate up to 330 tons of green hydrogen each year produced 100% from photovoltaic plants and allow the reduction of up to 20,700 tons of CO2 per year. Green hydrogen is currently the subject of numerous medium and long-term projects across Spain, for which the government is working…

Researchers at H2Win in Nivelles, Belgium, are looking into a new method of producing hydrogen. In this process, blue-green algae and their enzymes are utilized. Using this technology should save money and the environment because it produces no CO2. Only water and sunlight are required for life. An application to replace platinum in fuel cells, as well as hydrogen cars, is being prepared by the company. Hydrogen is currently produced by steam reforming methane, which releases CO2, or by electrolysis, which uses a lot of electricity, which is not necessarily green or blue. A new solution has been devised by…

Hydrogen has quickly risen to the forefront of climate change debates in the last few years. As one of the most hotly debated energy topics, fossil hydrogen (or “blue hydrogen”) is being pushed for government support by the fossil fuel industry. They say it’s environmentally friendly because it uses carbon capture technology to trap and store emissions, which can aid in efforts to decarbonize the energy system. Shell owns “Quest,” an extremely rare plant of this type in Alberta, Canada. An example of how oil and gas companies are tackling global warming, Shell has claimed that the project proves carbon…

Hydrogen separation from natural gas streams can be demonstrated using Linde’s HISELECT powered by Evonik membrane technology at the world’s first full-scale pilot plant, which was officially opened in Dormagen by Linde Engineering. Hydrogen-natural gas blends and pipeline transportation are made possible by this procedure. Between 5% and 60% hydrogen can be found in the blended gas. At the point of consumption, hydrogen is extracted from these natural gas streams using membranes. The resulting hydrogen is up to 90% concentrated. Up to 99.9999 percent purity can be achieved with Linde Engineering’s pressure swing adsorption technology (PSA). Efforts to build hydrogen…

In the coming years, green hydrogen could become a key component of Spain’s decarbonization strategy. It’s critical because it can be used to decarbonize all of the parts of the economy that are difficult to convert to electricity. Until now, its use has been largely anecdotal; it accounts for less than 0.01 percent of total consumption in Spain, and it was prohibitively expensive in comparison to the most polluting version. With the current price of gas at 78 euros per megawatt, a kilo of gray hydrogen would cost 4.1 euros to produce, while green hydrogen would cost 3.2 euros. The…

To refuel SunLine’s growing hydrogen bus fleet, an Indio mobile station has been added to SunLine’s Thousand Palms facility, which is home to the country’s largest hydrogen fueling station dedicated to transit. The hydrogen refueling system is essentially a mobile trailer made possible by a collaboration with NICE American Research, the technology’s creator. For the past six years, NICE has been collaborating with SunLine on the development of its first mobile pump trailer, which is based in Indio. Previously, all of SunLine’s hydrogen buses traveled to Thousand Palms for refueling, despite the fact that some buses were stored at the…

Victrex is urging the UK government to assist in the development of future hydrogen networks, which will be critical in assisting businesses and the UK in meeting climate change goals. Victrex, based in Thornton-Cleveleys, UK, wants to tap into UK hydrogen networks to help achieve a carbon net zero goal by 2030. Victrex, a major UK exporter serving household names in the Aerospace, Automotive, Electronics, Energy & Industrial, and Medical end markets, could benefit from access to hydrogen. Several hydrogen clusters have been proposed in the UK, including one in Cheshire, but none of them have any ties to major…

Hynion has entered into an agreement to supply hydrogen to buses in Sandviken, Sweden, while also taking over Linde’s hydrogen filling station in Sandviken to provide hydrogen fuel to both buses and cars. With the purchase of the Sandviken hydrogen station, Hynion will become Sweden’s largest supplier of zero-emission hydrogen fuel. The company now has a good starting point for developing the hydrogen market in the transportation sector, with three stations in Gothenburg, Stockholm, and Sandviken. Transdev, a transportation company, recently invested in two hydrogen buses, which will soon be put into regular service on behalf of X-trafik, Sandviken’s public…
