Alstom and Hynamics, the EDF Group’s hydrogen subsidiary, signed a partnership agreement to optimize hydrogen refueling of passenger trains. This collaboration will hasten the development of hydrogen trains while also shortening the time required to refuel them. Already, the Alstom and Hynamics teams are working together on modeling, calculation, and simulation. This work, which notably mobilizes the skills and resources of “EDF Lab,” will then be tested beginning in 2022 on the electrolyser test platform at ‘EDF Lab Les Renardières,’ one of three Électricité de France R&D centers located in Écuelles (Seine-et-Marne). A hydrogen production station, a 450 bar compressor,…

According to Australian National University researchers, new technologies that allow hydrogen to be produced directly from solar energy without the use of expensive electrolyzers could pave the way to low-cost renewable hydrogen supplies. The ANU research team developed new “photoelectrode” designs in new research published in the journal Advanced Energy Materials, which could be a critical step toward high efficiency and low-cost renewable hydrogen production. Conventional solar cells convert sunlight into electric current by using semiconductor materials. Solar cell design advancements over the last few decades have established solar technologies as one of the cheapest sources of electricity generation with…

The HYBRIT-initiative is granted support from the European Union, as one of seven large-scale innovative projects under the Innovation Fund. The European Union is in total investing over €1.1 billion into the seven projects. The EU Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programs for demonstrating innovative technologies that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Due to the fact that it was the only iron and steel project to receive funding in the first round of the Innovation Fund’s large-scale project call, HYBRIT will likely attract the attention of other interested parties. The “HYBRIT demonstration project” will replace coal-based…
