A coalition of researchers and scientists have released the findings of a year-long study into the impacts of sourcing metals to produce battery cathodes and wiring for electric vehicles (EVs).
Orbital Marine Power (Orbital), a developer of floating tidal stream turbines, has named Oliver Wragg as its new commercial director. Before joining Orbital Oliver was the commercial director at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) for over six years. Oliver has been an active board member of Ocean Energy Europe since 2010 and in 2012 was awarded the Lennard Senior Prize for Outstanding Individual Achievement in the field of marine energy. “Oliver joining the team at Orbital is a huge boost for our commercial ambitions. He comes with an unrivalled marine energy network that stretches around the world and I’m…
U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) latest ‘Monthly Electric Generator Inventory Report’ has shown that the electric power sector installed nearly 23,000 megawatts (MW) of new generating capacity in 2019. This new capacity was primarily in onshore wind – 9,100 MW, natural gas-fired – 8,300 MW, and solar photovoltaic (PV) – 5,300 MW technologies. The South region accounted for nearly half of the total capacity additions in the United States last year. In the Northeast region, access to abundant natural gas supply from the Marcellus and Utica shale plays in Pennsylvania and Ohio has led to increases in natural gas-fired power plant…
Vestas plans to lay off approximately 400 employees, primarily located in Denmark, along with stopping certain projects with immediate effect, all due to currently ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Vestas informed that due to the extraordinary situation from the pandemic, additional measures are needed to ensure the organisation executes as strongly as possible on the order backlog and customer commitments in 2020. To this end, Vestas intends to reduce its workforce across functions in Denmark that do not directly support 2020 deliveries. In addition to layoffs in Denmark, a limited number of layoffs is also expected in other locations in Europe. Furthermore, Vestas’…
At a time when the sustainability of the world has came into the focus, Wales and Anglesey in particular, are showing a large potential with well-developed marine energy partnerships and projects in the pipeline gearing up to generate clean, low carbon electricity. Over recent weeks, due to the coronavirus pandemic and the world changing around us, we’ve seen clear skies and waters in some of world’s most polluted cities and wildlife returning to habitats that had become uninhabitable. There’s never been more evidence that sustainable energy is not just ‘nice to have’, it’s a necessity. The north west coast of…
Heerema Fabrication Group has been awarded a fabrication deal of the Greater Changhua pre-piling template for Heerema Marine Contractors. The pre-piling template is a tool that enables Heerema Marine Contractors to install the piles accurately. It consists of three pile sleeves connected by framing including hydraulically adjustable pile guides and mudmats. Heerema Vlissingen will fabricate the steel structure and assist with commissioning. Heerema Marine Contractors has been assigned the transport and installation of 111 turbine foundations and the installation of two offshore substations for the Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind projects in Taiwan. The offshore work at the Greater…
EC-OG has received £1.6 million from an investment consortium led by Par Equity for the exploitation of its Halo battery storage system designed for subsea applications. The investment will create up to 40 jobs in Aberdeen over the next 12 months. Halo is a modular and scalable battery storage system that operates in the subsea environment. By removing the need for undersea power cables, it provides a reliable, uninterrupted power supply, located at the point of use. The investment in EC-OG is the first that Par Equity has made since its recent partnership with the British Business Bank. The funds…
TenneT has contracted eight cable suppliers to develop a new standard for a submarine cable system, to be used for offshore wind connections. The participating suppliers are: Hellenic Cables, LS Cable & System, Nexans Norway, Ningbo Orient Wires & Cables, NKT HV Cables, Prysmian Powerlink, Sumitomo Electric Industries, Zhongtian Technology Submarine Cable. The new cable system is required for the planned 2GW offshore grid connections in the Netherlands and in Germany, which set a new standard for connecting offshore wind farms. A 525 kV HVDC extruded submarine cable system with a 2GW capacity is currently not implemented in any project…
