Maritime Partners (MP), Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG), and e1 Marine have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a hydrogen-powered inland towboat for use in the United States. Designed to tow barges along the Mississippi River and its tributaries, the Hydrogen One towboat is intended to be used in a massive 14,500-mile waterway network that stretches from the Port of New Orleans. At 6 miles per hour, Hydrogen One will be able to travel for about four days before needing to refuel, covering approximately 560 miles. Its propulsion system will be able to generate up to 2,700 HP…

A green, environmentally friendly Integrated Steel Mill in Mundra, Gujarat, as well as other business ventures, have been agreed to by POSCO and the Adani Group. Up to $5 billion is expected to be invested. Following on from POSCO and Adani’s non-binding memorandum of understanding, the companies plan to work together even more closely at the group business level in order to meet carbon reduction goals in various industries like renewable energy, hydrogen fuel cell technology, and logistics. Both parties are looking at various ways to collaborate and leverage the strengths of each company’s technical, financial, and operational components. A…
With Toyota fuel cell technology, the first hydrogen bus built by CaetanoBus has been added to the fleet of the Transportes Metropolitanos de Barcelona (TMB). For regular lines of Barcelona’s public transportation, it is expected to begin operating in 2022 if all necessary paperwork is completed. Within TMB’s decarbonization plan, CaetanoBus will supply eight hydrogen buses. H2 City Gold HD is a 12-meter-long bus with three doors, a maximum capacity of 87 passengers and a 180 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor from Siemens. It will be used for service in Barcelona (241 hp). It uses Toyota’s fuel cell technology, which…
Hydrogen fuel cells from Ballard Power Systems will power 31 modules totaling 3 MW for testing and deployment in a variety of end-use applications for a leading global construction, electric power and off-road equipment manufacturer. Integration, testing, and deployment of the modules are scheduled for the year 2022 and year 2023. “We are thrilled to be partnering with this important strategic account where we are able to offer Ballard’s portfolio of leading fuel cell engines across a variety of off-road and stationary power applications,” stated Randy MacEwen, Ballard’s President & CEO. “We see significant leverage in our business model where…
Spanish researchers from the CSIC have developed the first public service hydrogenerator in Spain that will use green hydrogen generated in situ using solar energy. Solar trackers and photovoltaic panels at the service station will power electrolysers that will produce hydrogen. Also included in the design is a cutting-edge control system that can forecast both supply and demand in real time. The hydropower plant will be able to produce 60 kilograms of hydrogen per day as a minimum from renewable sources. It is expected to begin operations in late 2022 and will be able to provide vehicles such as trucks,…
FuelCell Energy’s 7.4-megawatt SureSource fuel cell project in Yaphank, Long Island, New York, has begun conditional commercial operation after site construction was completed. “We are excited to be in commercial operation of our fuel cell platform in the Town of Brookhaven, New York,” commented Jason Few, President and Chief Executive Officer, FuelCell Energy. “We are executing on our promise to enable electrical resiliency and to deliver needed clean base load power to central Long Island, while reducing above ground risk associated with long distance high voltage transmission lines. Utilizing three of our fuel cell platforms, we will deliver to the…

The BOC and Foton Mobility have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop the hydrogen bus market in Australia and New Zealand. The agreement will see the two companies collaborate on the development of operational and commercial hydrogen bus models, including production, storage, and refueling, as well as leasing and maintenance arrangements. BOC will focus on refueling infrastructure as part of the agreement. The vehicles, on the other hand, will be under the management of Foton. In spite of this, manufacturers insist that hydrogen fueling is preferable to electrification for buses because it can be refueled in as little as…
The South Korean government has given the go-ahead for a consortium of industry leaders to develop a liquid hydrogen tank for ships, paving the way for hydrogen to be used in shipping. As a result of a joint effort between KRISO, Hylium Industries, POSCO, and KSOE, AIP has been granted by the Korean register to the four companies involved in developing this critical technology. There are two types of maritime liquid hydrogen fuel tanks that have been certified by the Korean Register, one made of 316L stainless steel and the other made of 316HN stainless steel. Liquid hydrogen storage containers…
