IREC, UPC, and the energy engineering firm AESA formed a consortium to develop a reversible electrolyzer for implementing hydrogen technologies in Barcelona. The electrolysis system was completed as part of the HyBCN project, which was funded by the City of Barcelona as part of Pla Barcelona Ciència 2020-2023. The goal of the project, which began in 2020 and is led by Marc Torrell of IREC, is to build a 1kW reversible electrolysis system based on solid oxide cells that can convert water into green hydrogen, store it, and produce renewable energy on demand in Barcelona. According to the project’s researchers,…

Snam4Mobility, an Italian energy infrastructure company, and OG, a Dutch company that owns and operates sustainable fuels service stations in the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden, have agreed to build a new Bio-LCNG refueling station in Paderborn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. This agreement is part of a larger sustainable mobility collaboration project between the two companies. The station, which will be built by Snam4Mobility by the end of the year and operated by OG as part of its network of service stations, will provide both liquefied and compressed biomethane to power sustainable mobility in Germany for both light and heavy-duty vehicles. Snam4Mobility…
HyCC and bp have agreed to collaborate on the development of H2-Fifty, a 250-megawatt green hydrogen plant in Rotterdam’s port area. The joint development agreement comes after a feasibility study revealed that the project can help the region’s industries decarbonize. The green hydrogen produced by H2-Fifty will be used to replace fossil-based feedstocks at BP’s Rotterdam refinery and other port-related industries. The project could help reduce CO2 emissions by up to 350,000 tonnes per year, which is about 40,000 Dutch citizens’ average emissions. H2-Fifty can help the Netherlands and Europe achieve their goals of making industry more sustainable and developing…
Oil & Gas UK, or OGUK for short, is changing its name and broadening its scope. It will now champion not only oil and gas, but also the low-carbon technologies that its members are developing. As of February 14, Offshore Energies UK will promote offshore wind generation, hydrogen production (where natural gas is converted into clean hydrogen), and CO2 capture and storage systems. The oil and gas sector will continue to be championed by Offshore Energies UK (OEUK). One exciting idea is to use renewable electricity from wind farms to power oil and gas installations, thereby reducing emissions associated with…
Xebec Adsorption has signed a contract with Belgium-based Desmet Ballestra to deliver the company’s first Hy.GEN-e on-site electrolyser unit for a food application. One of Desmet Bellestra’s major customers in North Africa will use the electrolyser system, which produces 100 Nm3/h of hydrogen, for a hydrogenation process. The company is leveraging its industrial expertise and supply to enable local production of sufficient amounts of hydrogen in order to meet the anticipated demand from fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Excess hydrogen quantities of high purity hydrogen can be used to fill emerging demand from FCEVs, so the installation will not only…
Nicholas Wrigley has been named Chairman and Director of First Hydrogen UK. Wrigley founded Winch Energy Group in 2008 and served as its CEO until recently, after which he became non-executive Chairman. Wrigley was also a founding partner of UPC Renewables, which has built over 4 gigawatts of wind power over the last 15 years. Wrigley will be in charge of First Hydrogen’s global development of hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered light and medium commercial vehicle business, as well as the company’s two MAN hydrogen fuel cell road legal demonstrators, which will be built in collaboration with AVL Powertrain UK and Ballard Power Systems.Wrigley…
Universal Hydrogen has signed a letter of intent with Paris-based Amelia (by Regourd Aviation) for three ATR 72-600 hydrogen conversion kits. Amelia is the first airline in France to use Universal Hydrogen’s services. As of September 2021, Universal Hydrogen will have a presence in Toulouse, France, with the opening of its first European engineering center. The engineering center is supporting the development of conversion kits for retrofitting regional aircraft with a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, such as those for the Amelia, as well as the development of modular storage capsules for the distribution of hydrogen to the airports. Universal Hydrogen…
With SCHMID Group, SunHydrogen plans to continue its partnership in 2022, but with a narrower focus. The companies have been working together to design and define the process platform for mass manufacturing of SunHydrogen’s nanoparticle-based green hydrogen panels through a partnership that was established in February 2021. Initially, the partnership focused on three key stages of development: design evaluation, process evaluation, and system engineering. SunHydrogen’s panel housing is a critical system component for ensuring the safe and efficient collection of hydrogen, and SCHMID will focus its efforts on its design and engineering. With this strategy, SunHydrogen will seek to diversify…
Aviation H2, which is developing Australia’s first hydrogen-fueled plane, has opened its doors to investors through the VCEX online trading platform. Its engineers are attempting to raise $300,000 in order to fund the project’s planning study for the development of a green energy jet engine plane. Aviation H2 engineers are currently evaluating design options based on reliability, environmental impact, efficiency, and weight. The team will present their recommendation on the most commercially viable model to begin building a prototype once their initial testing is completed in March 2022. Dr. Helmut Mayer, the company’s lead engineer and director, believes the first…
In order to produce green hydrogen from waste, a clean energy company H2-Industries has been granted permission to build a production facility in Egypt. To build a 1GW hydrogen production facility in East Port-Said, the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone has given H2-Industries permission. Green hydrogen will be produced by H2-Industries using waste materials like plastic, agricultural waste, and sewage sludge, which the company claims is more cost-effective than other methods of producing green and grey hydrogen. Four million tons of organic waste and non-recyclable plastic per year will be fed into the hydrogen plant at the…
