In response to EU recommendations to increase green hydrogen generation and imports, the European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) initiative has increased its objectives for a pan-European hydrogen pipeline network. EHB, an industry association comprised of gas transmission system operators (TSOs), has increased its objective for hydrogen pipes to over 28,000 kilometers (kilometers) by 2030 and 53,000 kilometers by 2040. Around 60% of this would be accomplished through the repurposing of existing natural gas pipes, while 40% would be accomplished through the construction of new pipelines. Last year at this time, the EHB planned an 11,600-kilometer network by 2030, increasing to 39,700-kilometers…
According to a top official of the Clean Energy Business Council (CEBC), the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has launched 47 blue and green hydrocarbon projects totaling $55 billion in investments.
Wood has developed a novel steam methane reforming (SMR) method that can reduce CO2 emissions by 95 percent when compared to conventional hydrogen generation. The technique is intended to address inefficiencies in energy production, heat production, and industrial processes, which collectively account for more than half of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. Wood argues that reducing the carbon intensity of hydrogen generation is the best strategy to reduce these emissions and build a more sustainable future while simultaneously satisfying growing demand for electricity. Valentina Depetri, Wood’s Hydrogen Process Lead, demonstrated the technology last month at the Energy & Sustainability Forum…
KPIT Technologies, a major global provider of automotive solutions, has teamed with a number of vehicle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to develop a process for producing hydrogen from biomass such as wheat and rice straw. Hydrogen can be created from biomass through microbial action on wheat and rice straw, as well as through wood combustion. Unlike batteries, which take up a lot of space and lower transporter payloads, hydrogen as a biomass-based fuel has the potential to overcome two significant industry issues: high battery costs and limited battery space on vehicles. “The cost of hydrogen produced from biomass is significantly…
In Mexico, researchers examined the integration of hydrogen-based power-to-gas-to-power into an existing rural microgrid. They stated that this method may become competitive if the costs of the electrolyzer, fuel cell, and hydrogen tank are halved, or if diesel prices continue to rise. The National Institute of Electricity and Clean Energy in Mexico undertook a techno-economic feasibility study to determine the viability of integrating hydrogen-based power-to-gas-to-power (P2G2P) in a rural microgrid servicing the Puertecitos community in the Mexican state of Baja California. Hydrogen would be used to store surplus renewable energy during the winter, with the hydrogen facility consisting of an…
Statkraft and Skagerak Energi awarded 14MNOK in support to develop the green hydrogen bunkering solution for the world’s first zero-emission bulk carrier.
Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power, discusses how his firm is dealing with supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic and geopolitical challenges in an interview with Bloomberg.
Burckhardt Compression, based in Winterthur, Switzerland, has begun work on a hydrogen test facility to explore sealing technologies and solutions for hydrogen filling stations for heavy-duty cars.
Mitsubishi Power has announced plans to build the Takasago Hydrogen Park, which will be the world’s first center for validation of hydrogen-related technologies, from hydrogen manufacturing to power generation.
The CEGH GreenGas Platform will begin as a biogas marketplace, allowing for the purchase and sale of biomethane with or without assurances of provenance, according to CEGH. Green hydrogen will be exchanged on the platform whenever it becomes accessible on the market.
