The UAE has partnered with the Netherlands to advance research and development of hydrogen fuel. Suhail Al Mazrouei, the UAE’s Minister for Energy and Infrastructure, and Liesje Schreinemacher, the Netherlands’ Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, inked an initial arrangement on hydrogen power on Monday at the Expo 2020 site. According to Mr Al Mazrouei’s statement, “such partnerships help catalyze the transition to hydrogen energy and aid the two countries in creating programs and initiatives to support the Paris Climate Agreement.” Additionally, the official stated, it will open up new opportunities for expansion and progress by diversifying the energy…

Two companies sign a memorandum of understanding to engage in three areas of mutual interest: decarbonisation, digitization, and hydrogen. On March 9th, 2022, MAN Energy Solutions and the classification organization DNV signed a Memorandum of Understanding via a digital ceremony (MoU). Effective immediately, the MoU is intended to run for a duration of three years. The memorandum requires the two firms to specify action plans in the areas of decarbonisation, the hydrogen value chain, and digitization by June 30th, 2022. Dr Uwe Lauber, CEO, and Dr Gunnar Stiesch, Head of Engineering, of MAN Energy Solutions signed the pact, while Remi…
The launch of a hydrogen-electric minibus in Slovakia represents a significant step toward delivering zero-emission solutions for urban transit across Europe – as the world’s most fuel-efficient and fastest-refueling vehicle of its kind. The eight-metre, 21-passenger H2Bus is manufactured by Slovakian innovators Mobility & Innovation and features an integrated alternative fuel system designed and supplied by Luxfer Gas Cylinders. The system includes four G-Stor® Pro cylinders, as well as valves and regulators, all packaged in a’ready to assemble’ kit. Luxfer’s cylinders have the highest capacity, are the quickest to refill, and are the lightest Type 3 alternative fuel cylinders on…
As the cost of blue and gray hydrogen increases in lockstep with rising fossil fuel prices, Rystad Energy research predicts that the feasibility of green hydrogen as an affordable and secure source of renewable energy in Europe will grow. Globally, green hydrogen production was already on track to begin this year and reach the 1-GW mark in 2022. However, the conflict in Ukraine has accelerated the sector’s growth. Green hydrogen’s potential victory comes at the expense of its fossil fuel-based blue and gray alternatives, whose prices have risen by more than 70% since the outbreak of the Ukraine war, rising…
The UNSW SMaRT Centre has published three scientific papers demonstrating the use of waste coffee grounds and hydrogen extracted from other wastes in its patented Green Steel technology. The latest research breakthroughs on SMaRT@UNSW’s Green Steel Polymer Injection Technology (PIT) demonstrate that various wastes can be used to make steel more sustainably in electric arc furnaces through industrial trials with partner Molycop. Wastes such as plastic and coffee grounds now join waste rubber tires as alternative sources of coke and coal, which were previously required for steel production, and can provide the element hydrogen, which significantly improves the manufacturing process’s…
With the start-up of a 50 kilowatt PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyzer and 270 solar panels at the Cartagena Refinery, the Ecopetrol Group began its first pilot project for the production of green hydrogen in Colombia. The pilot, which will run for the next three months, uses industrial water from the refinery to produce 20 kg of high purity (99.999%) green hydrogen daily. This test will allow gathering information on the operation, maintenance, reliability and scalability of the technologies used. At the end of the pilot at the refinery, other tests will continue with other Ecopetrol Group operations. The main…
The energy transition is to succeed with green hydrogen. But the potential in Germany remains limited. This is due to a lack of green electricity, high costs and too few electrolysers. Green hydrogen should at least serve as a basic material in industry and ensure the success of the energy transition in some areas of mobility. “Hydrogen can be produced using various processes, whereby the greatest potential is seen in the electrolysis process, in which water and electrical energy are combined to form hydrogen,” Springer authors Mirko Kruse and Jan Wedemeier describe the basic process in their journal article Potential…
The industrial hydrogen ecosystem in the Northern Netherlands is getting a boost with the project Waviater: Hydrogen Production Technology for the Aviation Sector and Energy Applications at the Regional Level. In the project, a Northern Dutch consortium will develop green hydrogen technology. At the beginning of this month, the North Netherlands Cooperation Agency awarded a subsidy for it from the European Regional Development Fund (Efro). Consortium partners are Douna Machinery Leeuwarden, JB Besturingstechniek, RedStack, Demcon, Groningen Airport Eelde, New Energy Coalition and Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, supported by TNO and Vonk. The first concrete application is at Groningen Airport Eelde. There, an…
The H2StationTM modules will be installed in the planned HysetCo station in Le Bourget, which will be operational in 2022, thanks in part to the FCH JU (Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking) public-private cooperation.
China’s Baowu Steel Group, the world’s largest steel producer, has started construction of a hydrogen mine furnace for reduced iron production at its Zhanjiang smelter in southern Guangdong province. The cost of the project is 1.89 billion yuan (almost $300 million). The furnace should have a production capacity of 1 million tons per year. It is expected to be launched by the end of 2023. According to Baowu, the project should result in lower carbon dioxide emissions. The group aims to become carbon-neutral by 2050. The introduction of hydrogen metallurgy technology is one of its decarbonization initiatives. The production of…
