Canadian Solar has sold the Suffield Solar project to BluEarth Renewables. Currently under construction in southeastern Alberta, the project will have a capacity of 23 MWac/32 MWp, and will be one of Alberta’s largest solar PV facilities. Direct Energy will buy the Suffield facility electricity when it is operational later this year. With nearly one million private, business and wholesale clients in Alberta, Direct Energy is one of the largest energy and energy-related service providers in North America. The Suffield facility was awarded funding for cutting-edge developments in renewable energy technology through the Emerging Renewable Power Program of Natural Resources…

‘Green Hydrogen for Scotland’ –a collaboration between ScottishPower Renewables, BOC –a Linde company and ITM Power –brings together industry-leading names in the renewables and clean fuel industries to deliver a ‘end-to-end’ market solution for vehicle emissions reduction through green hydrogen supplies. Hydrogen fuel is produced by a chemical process known as electrolysis, using an electrolyser to remove hydrogen from water, which is especially necessary for larger vehicles. The proposed ‘Green Hydrogen for Scotland’ designed facilities would ensure that zero emission fuel is readily available to organisations such as local authorities and others with heavy duty vehicle fleets. The first initiative…
New research reveals that polymetallic rocks located on the deep-sea floor can supply hundreds of millions of tons of heavy-duty battery metals to store energy and power electric vehicles (EVs) with much less effect on the atmosphere than to extract the same metals from the earth. The peer-reviewed research, published in the ‘Journal of Cleaner Production’, is a comparative life-cycle assessment of EV battery metal sources, quantifying direct and indirect emissions and destruction of carbon sequestration services performed in the mining, processing and refining of battery metals. The carbon intensity of manufacturing metals such as nickel has led to increased interest…
Watson Farley & Williams (WFW) has advised National Westminster Bank (NatWest) as lenders of the £30 million portfolio of UK rooftop and ground-mounted solar PV projects run by Innova Energy (Innova) with a total installed capacity of 57 MW. This is the first project financing undertaken by NatWest using SONIA (Sterling Overnight Index Average), which is being introduced as part of the LIBOR (London Interbank Offered Rate) transformation, a phase that has been under progress for a number of years and is expected to be completed by the end of 2021 with the release of LIBOR. NatWest was the leading…
A recent Hitachi ABB Power Grids study indicates that the North American energy industry’s future is undeniably green. Titled ‘North America Power Reference Case: Spring 2020,’ the study forecasts that renewable energy production will see double-digit growth in the next 25 years. The report is based on data gathered by the intelligence service of the business organization, Velocity Suite, informed by its proprietary capacity expansion model, and its well-established cost model of PROMOD production. Renewable energy and natural gas are projected to dominate North American power generation for the next two decades, powered by declining capital costs and conflicting federal,…
Vestas has entered the Colombian wind power market with a 20 MW order for the Guajira I wind park, located at the municipality of Uribia, in La Guajira, Colombia. The contract covers the supply and installation of ten V100-2.0 MW turbines, as well as an Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service agreement to run and maintain the wind park for the next 12 years. The multinational business group Elecnor and Isagen, one of Colombia’s most powerful power generators with over 3 GW of hydroelectric and thermal energy projects, placed the order. The Guajira I wind park, once completed, will provide…
GE Renewable Energy has been selected by Megha Engineering and Infrastructure (MEIL) to supply and commission four 125 MW fixed speed pumped storage turbines for the new Kundah hydropower plant in India. This greenfield project is part of initiatives funded by India’s central government to increase hydropower capacity locally significantly including pumped hydro storage solutions. The policies are aimed at ensuring sustainable and flexible energy production during periods of peak demand and thus enhancing grid stability in the region. This new plant will be run by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), a state government utility. “With the measures…
The Nordex Group has received a 312 MW order to supply 65 N149/4.0-4.5 turbines in 4.8MW operating mode to a wind farm in Texas. The installation is expected to begin in May 2021 and the grid will be linked to the wind farm later in the same year. Customer and project have not been disclosed. “This order underscores again the growing interest of our US customers in the powerful turbines of the Delta4000 series. With regards to the N149/4.0-4.5 turbines with a 4.8 MW rated capacity, the Nordex Group is now delivering and installing 265 units, amounting meanwhile to 1,272…
NKT has expanded its capacity for transporting and storing offshore power cables from its German factory in Cologne, to meet the increasing demand for power cables in the offshore industry, Demand for offshore power cables is expected to rise in the coming years as offshore wind continues to be important for the global renewable energy transition. NKT is now investing in a new specially constructed barge equipped for cable transport on the Rhine with a promising business outlook and a heavy order backlog to expand transport capacity and improve supply protection from its production site in Cologne. NKT also raises…
