ORE Catapult’s National Renewable Energy Center has resumed activity after introducing measures to ensure staff safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a key part of the UK’s infrastructure for clean energy, ORE Catapult is undertaking critical research, test, and validation programs that are essential for the progress of major offshore renewable projects. “Whilst many of our staff continue to work remotely where they are able to do so, the restart of key programmes across our world-leading blades, powertrains, electrical and subsea testing facilities will ensure that the UK can continue to address it’s binding net zero targets and drive economic growth and…

Origis Energy entered into a large-scale virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Royal DSM for renewable electricity from the Rockhound Solar C project. The 61MW solar facility will be located in Ector County, Texas, and it will support DSM’s RE100 goals. “This is the large step forward, representing approximately 40 percent of our total purchased electricity volume in the USA. A significant deal for DSM, in our journey to our commitment of sourcing 75 percent of our global electricity demand from renewable resources by 2030. We are excited to continue this journey with this Origis partnership, accelerating the transformation to renewable…
Subsea 7 has been awarded a contract worth between $150 – $300 million by Vattenfall for the Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) 1-4 offshore wind farm project. Approximately 140 wind turbine monopile foundations and 315km of 66kV inner array grid cables will be installed in water depths between 18 and 27 meters. Installation is scheduled for 2021 and 2022 using Seaway 7’s heavy lift, cable lay and support vessels. When completed, the HKZ 1-4 offshore wind farms will have an installed capacity of approximately 1.5GW, which will meet the needs of around 2-3 million Dutch households. “We look forward to working…
Michael Moore presents Planet of the Humans, a documentary that dares to say what no one else will this Earth Day — that we are losing the battle to stop climate change on planet earth because we are following leaders who have taken us down the wrong road — selling out the green movement to wealthy interests and corporate America. This film is the wake-up call to the reality we are afraid to face: that in the midst of a human-caused extinction event, the environmental movement’s answer is to push for techno-fixes and band-aids. It’s too little, too late. Removed…
Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel Aeolus has completed the installation of 77 foundations for the Borssele III & IV wind farm. The Aeolus has been deployed for the last six months, transporting and installing the foundations 22 kilometers off the coast of the Province of Zeeland. Van Oord’s cable-laying vessel Nexus has also installed 4 out of the 12 cable strings. “The Borssele III & IV project reached a milestone with the installation of the 77 foundations. The work was executed within planning in 6 months. Despite the extra precautions in connection with coronavirus, we were able to continue the…
Trelleborg has introduced the NjordGuard integrated cable protection system developed and designed to protect offshore wind farm power cables. The NjordGuard system manages the movement of subsea cables of monopile and J-tube wind turbines and offshore substations (OSS) in the free span between the seabed and an installation’s aperture. “Our NjordGuard cable protection system is specifically designed to protect wind farm power cables from fatigue, over-bending and abrasion due to loads and motions generated by the field wave tidal conditions. It incorporates Trelleborg’s market leading Njord BS (Bend Stiffener) technology, proven to reduce the risk of failure by better managing the…
Ingeteam has launched its new-generation wind power converters developed for high power DFIG application. The grid-friendly converters include FRT, SCR, and SSR features, making them usable anywhere in the world. The new DFIG converters can bring customized solutions that will effectively minimize wind turbine LCoE. Reliability, availability and maintainability have been ensured by the overall design. High versatility enables them to interact with a wide range of grid connections, regardless of the particular local grid codes and conditions.
Innogy has sold its installation vessel ‘Seabreeze II’ and related equipment to Hong Kong based SPIC Ronghe International Financial Leasing. Divestment fits Innogy’s strategic decision to exit the offshore service vessel market. The agreement was signed in February. “A decade ago Innogy took the decision to eliminate an important bottleneck in the construction of offshore wind farms via the ownership and operation of its own installation vessels. However, since that time, such bottlenecks have eased through the availability of a range of state of the art installation vessels that are available worldwide in Innogy’s current and future core markets. As…
First Solar has signed two 15-year power purchase agreements to sell with Community Choice Aggregators (CCAs), Monterey Bay Community Power (MBCP), and Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE). Under the agreement, the agencies will buy electricity from the Rabbitbrush solar project developed by First Solar in Kern County, California. The 100-megawatt AC photovoltaic solar plant, scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of 2022, will also have 20MW of battery storage capacity, capable of delivering electricity for 2.5 hours. “We are delighted to partner with First Solar to add to our growing solar generation and battery storage portfolio. Responsibly developed to minimize its impact…
Eco Wave Power has entered an official concession agreement with APDL regarding the usage of an area suitable for the construction, operation, and maintenance of a wave energy power plant in Portugal. The agreement will see APDL provide EWP with the concession for its breakwaters for a period of 25 to 30 years. Eco Wave will be responsible for securing all the necessary licenses, constructing and commissioning the power plant, and selling the generated electricity. The plan is to construct and commission the power plant in two stages. In the first stage, Eco Wave will build an up to 5…
