Bayer, E.ON, Iqony, and Westenergie have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore the establishment of a hydrogen cluster in Bergkamen.

The collaborative effort aims to investigate the feasibility of producing green hydrogen from imported ammonia, paving the way for a comprehensive hydrogen value chain in the region.

The partners envision a hydrogen cluster that spans the entire value chain, from planning to marketing, with the core focus on green hydrogen production based on imported ammonia. The potential customers, located at Bayer Group’s Bergkamen Industrial Park, could soon benefit from a locally produced and sustainable hydrogen supply.

E.ON, a leading international energy company, will play a pivotal role in ammonia procurement, logistics, and hydrogen sales. Additionally, E.ON will explore further utilization and marketing opportunities, emphasizing the commitment to a holistic approach in green hydrogen production.

Iqony, as a service provider and plant operator in the green energy sector, will oversee ammonia storage, construct and operate the ammonia cracker, and manage site preparation measures at Bayer’s Bergkamen site. A crucial aspect of the planning includes the construction of a pipeline for efficient hydrogen transportation to Bayer’s industrial park.

Westenergie, an energy service and infrastructure provider, will conduct an in-depth review of pipeline construction, focusing on technical feasibility and legal approval aspects. This multi-faceted collaboration aims to create a hydrogen hub with significant potential to contribute to local industry decarbonization.

The partners recognize the immense potential of developing a hydrogen cluster in Bergkamen. The direct use of green hydrogen aligns with ongoing decarbonization efforts in local industries. Positioned in the proximity of the Datteln-Hamm Canal and equipped with robust infrastructure, the region presents unique opportunities for expanding hydrogen initiatives.

Dr. Andreas Reichel, CEO of Iqony, emphasizes the need for import infrastructure, stating, “The Bergkamen hydrogen cluster is a contribution to the establishment of such an import infrastructure.”
