BMW Concept iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6, the first hydrogen fuel cell-powered armored car

We do not know what the future of the automobile will look like, whether it will be electric, hybrid, fuel cell, or some other yet-to-be-discovered technology.

What we do know is that manufacturers are always innovating, one of which is the BMW Concept iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6.

It is a concept vehicle that is designed to suit the demands of persons and those who want additional protection, while also creating new sustainability norms in its vehicle class.

The BMW Group demonstrates the capability of hydrogen fuel cell technology for locally CO2-free driving with this concept automobile, demonstrating that it can be linked with a safety car.

The BMW Group has a more than 40-year history of developing and manufacturing safety vehicles with varying degrees of protection. The new concept’s foundation car is the BMW X5 Protection VR6.

Given that it is the world’s best-selling safety vehicle in the premium class of Sports Activity Vehicles, it makes perfect sense to make it a zero-emission hydrogen model.

The model complies with the standards of the VR6 endurance class, as defined by the Association of Vandal Resistant Materials and Structures Testing Centers’ official internationally recognized test criteria (VPAM). Its reinforced passenger compartment protects against weapons and explosive charges attacks. BMW’s distinctive outstanding dynamic behavior, which enables escape from potentially dangerous circumstances, and its discreet appearance also contribute to the vehicle’s exceptionally high degree of safety.

With an armored passenger compartment constructed of high-strength steel castings, protective glazing approximately 30 millimeters thick, hermetically sealed recesses in sensitive areas such as the doors and body, as well as an armored trunk partition, the vehicle can withstand gunfire from the world’s most widely used weapon, the AK-47, and shrapnel from HG 85 hand grenade attacks. Additionally, the armored passenger compartment can resist lateral blasts of up to 15 kilos of TNT equivalent at a four-meter distance.

The protective glazing’s post-explosion protection technology is particularly effective at preventing secondary attacks. Even after an explosion, all windows retain their original construction positions, ensuring that no gaps between the glass and the body exist.
