Companhia Energética Integrada (CEI), a Brazilian company specializing in electricity generation and greenfield projects for solar and hydroelectric plants, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of photovoltaic and green hydrogen production plants in Porto Central.
This industrial complex multipurpose private port is located in the south of Espírito Santo and is under development.
The partnership between CEI and Porto Central aims to conduct feasibility studies, licensing, installation, and construction of the plant, which is expected to be operational by 2026 with an estimated investment of BRL 100 million. The solar plant, with a capacity of 10 MWp, will produce up to 300 tons of green hydrogen and up to 1700 tons of green ammonia annually.
CEI sees low-carbon hydrogen as a strategic investment in line with its sustainable purpose, which has a generator park powered by 100% renewable sources. The scalable project, which will be integrated into the Green Energy Hub, one of the port’s priority areas, could potentially expand production capacity by adding new electrolyser units and increasing solar energy generation.
Jessica Chan, the commercial manager of Porto Central, explains that the Green Energy Hub has attracted the attention of major players because it combines high potential for renewable energy generation, with wind and solar parks, with a privileged geographic position to serve the domestic consumer market of green energy and local and international industrial centers.
The initiative is part of the energy transition efforts to collaborate towards energy security with carbon emissions-free energy for different sectors of the market. However, the project may face challenges related to regulations and infrastructure. Still, it is a significant step towards the development of clean energy and the decarbonization of the world economy.
