The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has made significant strides in promoting sustainable energy through its Green Hydrogen project at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.
This innovative project bolsters the city’s mobility efforts and aims to enhance energy efficiency in the transportation sector. Since its inception in May 2021, the project has produced roughly 90 tonnes of green hydrogen. A significant portion has been directed towards generating green energy, with over 2.5 tonnes provided to ENOC Group’s Service Station of the Future at Expo City Dubai. This supply can fuel 500 cars and has already reduced CO2 emissions by over 40 tonnes.
DEWA’s Green Hydrogen project stands as the first in the Middle East and North Africa region to harness solar energy for hydrogen production. It is designed for versatility, paving the way for various future applications, including air, land, and sea transportation and potential industrial uses. DEWA’s commitment aligns with the UAE’s national objectives for sustainable development, encouraging a shift towards electric and hybrid vehicles to lower carbon emissions.
In partnership with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, DEWA has developed this facility to generate about 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour, with storage capabilities for up to 12 hours. The technology utilizes hydrogen in a gas motor with an approximate 300-kilowatt capacity, showcasing the potential for future energy solutions.
