The historic RB27 rail service, known as the ‘Heidekrautbahn’, has experienced a disruption in its planned switch to fuel-cell trains due to a lack of hydrogen supply from renewable developer Enertrag.
Although six Siemens Mireo Plus H trains commenced passenger service on December 16, their operation was suspended just 11 days later, according to the public transit agency VBB.
The suspension of the Heidekrautbahn service, which has traditionally served as a major tourist route connecting Berlin with surrounding holiday destinations, is attributed to delays in the completion of a refueling station in Basdorf.
This station was intended to supply hydrogen to the trains but has faced setbacks due to delivery issues with the dispensers. The situation underscores the challenges facing the integration of hydrogen fuel into public transportation systems, particularly when infrastructure development lags behind operational timelines.
