Enagás Renovable and Verbund Green Hydrogen GmbH have recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing large-scale green hydrogen production and transport from Spain to Central Europe.
The partnership focuses on developing expansive green hydrogen projects in regions of Spain rich in wind and solar resources. This initiative aims to achieve high-volume production of renewable hydrogen at competitive costs, leveraging Spain’s industrial capabilities and renewable energy infrastructure.
Hydrogen produced under this initiative will be transported to Central Europe through the H2Med hydro-pipeline, in which Enagás is involved, and the European Hydrogen Backbone Network expected to be operational by 2030. This infrastructure is crucial for establishing a pan-European market for green hydrogen, promoting competitiveness and sustainability across the continent.
The MoU was unveiled at the ‘Connecting Green Hydrogen Europe 2024’ conference in Madrid, emphasizing the strategic importance of integrating Spanish hydrogen production into broader European energy transitions.
Antón Martínez, CEO of Enagás Renovables, highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of the partnership, emphasizing its role in bolstering local economies while facilitating hydrogen exports to Central Europe.
Michael Strugl, CEO of Verbund AG, underscored Spain’s pivotal role in expanding their hydrogen business, stressing the synergy between both companies in advancing trans-European hydrogen infrastructure and supply.
Compared to other European hydrogen initiatives like the H2Med project, involving collaboration between Spanish, French, Portuguese, and German operators, this partnership underscores Spain’s strategic positioning and potential as a key player in Europe’s hydrogen economy.
