Semarak Renewable Energy (RE), a Malaysian firm, and China Hydropower (Malaysia), a subsidiary of PowerChina, have inked a MYR1.88 billion ($398 million) agreement to spearhead Malaysia’s inaugural large-scale green hydrogen production project.

This transformative initiative will harness floating photovoltaic power generation technology, positioning the nation at the forefront of sustainable energy endeavors.

Located in Perak, the groundbreaking project aspires to revolutionize Malaysia’s energy landscape by integrating green hydrogen production and storage through the innovative application of floating photovoltaic power generation. The primary objectives encompass the comprehensive design, procurement, and construction (EPC) of floating photovoltaic power generation units, coupled with cutting-edge hydrogen production and storage facilities.

PowerChina, leveraging its prowess in the realm of new energy, is committed to expediting the project’s planning and construction phases. The company aims to actively support Semarak RE’s evolution into a key player in Malaysia’s burgeoning green hydrogen energy industry.

A recent study by German management consultancy Roland Berger forecasts a substantial surge in global hydrogen production. Projections indicate an increase to 110 million metric tons (Mt) annually by 2030, with an anticipated escalation to 240 Mt by 2040. Crucially, the study underscores the pivotal role of green hydrogen, constituting approximately 12% of the total volume by 2030. Green hydrogen is distinguished by its climate-neutral production methodology, relying on renewable energies.
