Green hydrogen production in Bremerhaven to start in 2023

Bremerhaven is part of the Hydrogen Region Northwest. From 2023, the first buses will run on gas from local wind power.

From mid-2023, an electrolyzer in Bremerhaven will supply green hydrogen for the local bus company. The energy transition company GP Joule ordered the electrolyzer with an output of 2 megawatts from H-Tec Systems.

The electricity required for the electrolysis will come from a nearby wind farm. The plant for hydrogen production is to be built in Bremerhaven’s Grauwallring industrial area. It is part of the HY.City.Bremerhaven hydrogen project was initiated by GP Joule and Green Fuels GmbH. The construction and operation of the electrolysis plant are the responsibility of GP Joule.

Green hydrogen is then to be delivered from the Grauwallring to a filling station at the Bremerhaven Bus depot. The hydrogen filling station will also be open to other customers. In March, the project received funding approval from the Federal Ministry of Transport as part of the “HyLand” funding. The HY.City.Bremerhaven is part of the hydrogen network project “Hyways for Future”, which extends over the metropolitan region north-west from Oldenburg to Cuxhaven.

The hydrogen economy in Bremerhaven is being implemented
While most hydrogen regions in Germany are still busy with preliminary studies, implementation is already underway in the northwest. The experiences of the actors from the eFarm project in North Friesland are a great help. Three of a total of five planned electrolysis units are already in operation there.

André Steinau, Managing Director of GP Joule Hydrogen: “The well-established cooperation and the reliable technology will help us to bring the project to the home stretch on time and to be able to offer regional green hydrogen in Bremerhaven in 2023. The fuel cell vehicles will make the city a bit quieter and cleaner.”

According to the manufacturer, the PEM electrolyzers from H-Tec Systems are very flexible and therefore particularly suitable for coupling with the fluctuating energy sources of wind and sun. They are delivered as a complete system in a container to speed up installation and commissioning.

The two companies are thus building on their collaboration in the eFarm project in North Friesland.
