H2 Energy Europe Secures UK Funding for 20MW Hydrogen Facility

H2 Energy Europe, a prominent developer of large-scale green hydrogen ecosystems, has proudly announced the receipt of government funding for its revolutionary 20MW electrolytic hydrogen production facility.

Situated at the port of Milford Haven, this project marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind in South Wales, aiming to propel the region into a cleaner, sustainable energy future.

The United Kingdom has set ambitious targets to establish up to 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production by 2030, with a substantial portion expected from electrolytic hydrogen. This vision aligns with the nation’s strategy to leverage the scaling up of offshore wind, other renewables, and nuclear energy.

H2 Energy Europe’s project at Milford Haven has been selected for financial support under the UK government’s Hydrogen Business Model and Net Zero Hydrogen Fund. The funding agreement, anticipated to be formalized in January 2024, comes following the already granted planning permission for the facility. The Final Investment Decision (FID) is expected in the first quarter of 2024, with commissioning slated for 2026.

Once operational, the Milford Haven facility will facilitate the transition of industrial users to green hydrogen sourced from domestic renewable energy. Beyond its environmental impact, the project is set to create permanent, high-skilled jobs and safeguard existing ones. The transition of the workforce from managing petroleum product storage to specializing in handling green hydrogen showcases the broader societal benefits of the initiative.

The green hydrogen produced at Milford Haven will serve diverse applications across South Wales, including shipping, industrial power, and acting as a chemical feedstock. The versatility of green hydrogen is underscored by its ability to support varied industries, including major local companies like Sofidel, a global producer of tissue paper.
