Hy2gen and Plug Power to Build Renewable Ammonia and Hydrogen Facility

Hy2gen, a prominent independent developer of plants for the production of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs), has unveiled plans to construct an 800MW facility for renewable ammonia production near Kokkola, Finland.

This development follows Plug Power Inc.’s announcement to establish the necessary infrastructure for renewable hydrogen production in a neighboring site. Hy2gen and Plug Power will join forces to develop the site and its infrastructure together.

The chosen location of the project, the port of Kokkola, is well-suited for this venture due to its existing capabilities to handle and transport significant quantities of ammonia. The renewable ammonia production facility, located 9 km away from the harbor, will generate 760,000 tons per year using hydrogen produced by Plug Power, which will be generated from 800MW of electricity at the neighboring site. In comparison to conventional grey ammonia, the production of renewable ammonia will result in saving up to 1,220,000 tons per year of CO2 emissions. Additionally, the utilization of renewable ammonia instead of traditional fuels will contribute to further emission reductions.

The Finnish City of Kokkola has secured the required land (55 hectares) for the ammonia plant. Once produced, the renewable ammonia will be exported through the facilities at Kokkola-harbour and distributed by Hy2gen’s partners. Kokkola is one of the strategic locations where Hy2gen is currently developing projects in the Baltic region.

Cyril Dufau-Sansot, Co-founder and CEO of Hy2gen AG, expressed enthusiasm for the rapidly evolving market for synthetic fuels, particularly along major sea routes and in Europe’s core markets. Dufau-Sansot highlighted Hy2gen’s commitment to supporting the transition to renewable fuels and energy carriers through their existing presence and various projects in the region. Hy2gen is already engaged in the Iverson eFuels-project in Norway, which aims to develop large-scale green ammonia production for maritime fleet fuel.

Dufau-Sansot also commended Plug Power for their strong involvement and investments in the Nordic markets. The partnership between Hy2gen and Plug Power is poised to accelerate the production of renewable fuels in the region, leveraging abundant renewable energy resources, the region’s dedicated workforce, and the unwavering commitment of the country to decarbonizing industries and transportation.

The collaboration between Hy2gen and Plug Power represents a significant step towards the decarbonization of the energy and transportation sectors. The production of renewable ammonia and hydrogen will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable energy solutions. By harnessing the power of renewable sources and leveraging the expertise of both companies, this joint venture is set to make a positive impact on the transition to a greener future.
