Green Cat Hydrogen intends to establish an electrolysis hydrogen plant on the grounds of the decommissioned Chapelcross nuclear power station in Annan, Scotland.
This move is positioned as a significant effort towards economic regeneration and the advancement of green technology within the region. The project is expected to yield 50 high-skilled permanent jobs along with 150 jobs during its construction phase. It is indicative of a broader trend where former industrial sites are being repurposed to meet sustainable energy goals.
The Chapelcross plant, having ceased nuclear operations in 2004, presents a strategic location with its existing grid connections and access to local renewable energy resources. The anticipated hydrogen plant will produce approximately 4,000 tons annually, targeting local industries such as food and drink for decarbonization. The hydrogen will be transported via tube trailer trucks, offering a practical solution to regions where direct electrification is not feasible.
This project aligns with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s (NDA) strategic vision of transforming Chapelcross into a hub for hydrogen production and advanced manufacturing, following its published plans in the previous year. This approach underscores a growing narrative in energy transition efforts, positioning hydrogen as a key driver in reducing carbon emissions, particularly in sectors where electrification poses technical challenges.
A thorough analysis of its infrastructure capabilities and regional synergies will be imperative in actualizing this vision. The history of the Chapelcross site in Scotland marks a critical juncture in energy production, stretching back to 1959 when it became the nation’s first nuclear power station. It traversed various stages, including the demolition of its cooling towers in 2007 and removal of nuclear fuel by 2013, leading up to its full decommissioning scheduled for completion by 2095.
