In a stride towards revolutionizing the green mobility landscape, Hyundai Motor Group is on the cusp of unveiling groundbreaking technology that extracts clean hydrogen from an unlikely source – food waste.

The conglomerate, already a dominant force in the fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) sector, is poised to reinforce its global leadership through an audacious venture that not only mitigates waste but propels clean energy innovation to unprecedented heights.

Hyundai Motor Group, encompassing Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Corp., and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., has partnered with South Korea’s Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corp., a state-run entity responsible for waste management. The collaboration is set to birth cutting-edge eco-friendly hydrogen technology, harnessing the power of biogas generated from food waste. This partnership embodies a multifaceted endeavor to reshape the trajectory of sustainable energy solutions.

Biogas: From Microbes to Hydrogen

At the heart of this revolutionary transformation lies biogas, a natural blend of methane and carbon dioxide. It’s a byproduct of microbial decomposition in environments devoid of oxygen. The fermentation process that breaks down food waste is a potent producer of biogas, with methane emerging as a primary component. This methane-rich biogas serves as the foundational source for generating high-purity clean hydrogen, illuminating a pathway towards truly sustainable energy production.

Hyundai Motor Group’s legacy in the FCEV realm is formidable. With over 50% of the global market share for hydrogen-powered vehicles in the first quarter, the popularity of the NEXO crossover has been a game-changer. This momentum seamlessly dovetails into their quest to harness biogas for clean hydrogen production, charting a course towards a greener horizon.

The ambitious partnership between Hyundai Motor Group and Sudokwon Landfill Site Management is marked by an audacious target: the development of a daily hydrogen production system that transforms biogas into 216 kilograms of eco-friendly hydrogen. Over the next two years, this transformative initiative aims to fuel more than just vehicles; it aims to fuel change. The output from this endeavor, when harnessed, can charge over 34 units of the NEXO FCEV, a testament to its potential.

Vision Beyond Vehicles: Clean Hydrogen’s Ripple Effect

Hyundai Motor Group’s aspirations extend far beyond vehicles. Their pioneering spirit aims to channel electrofuels, derivatives born from the clean hydrogen manufacturing process, into internal combustion engine cars. Simultaneously, they are pushing the boundaries of innovation by exploring the synthesis of clean hydrogen and carbon monoxide for eco-friendly plastic materials. This holistic approach speaks volumes about their commitment to shaping a sustainable future.
