Iberdrola will be in charge of the Atmosphere consortium, a project that will bring together various businesses to develop new technologies that can be used to upgrade the essential machinery in green hydrogen production facilities, thereby addressing every step along the value chain.

Budgeted at 6.2 million euros, the project will be completed between 2022 and 2025. It is a component of the Misiones initiative of the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI), from which it has received funding totaling 4.1 million euros.

The collaboration, which aims to lower the investment and running costs of green hydrogen reactors, will also comprise Ingeteam Power Technologies, Inerco Ingeniera Tecnológica y Consultora, ABC Compressors, Ingeniera y Diseo Europeo (Idesa), and Innomerics.

The participation of seven public research organizations (OPIs), including Tecnalia, IIT Comillas, the Idonial Foundation, the Public University of Navarra (UPNA), the Andalusian Association for Research and Industrial Cooperation (Aicia), the CEIT Technology Center Association, and the Idesa Technology & Research Center, will further promote public-private cooperation.

The Iberdrola plant in Puertollano (Ciudad Real), which has one of the world’s largest electrolysis-based hydrogen production systems with 20 megawatts (MW) built and a production capacity of up to 3,000 tons per year, will serve as the testing ground for the R+D+i proposals created by this consortium.

Iberdrola strengthens its investment in this sector, where it now has more than 60 projects in eight countries and alliances with 150 SMEs and large businesses, and moves closer to its goal of producing 350,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually by 2030.
