Jan De Nul Group, DEME Group, and Aertssen Group in JV Terranova join forces with Luminus and Nippon Gases to build and exploit an installation for the production of green hydrogen on the ‘Zonneberg’ in Zelzate.
The businesses have formed the new company Terranova Hydrogen NV. The three businesses aim to collaborate on the Zonneberg for the construction and operation of a 2.5 MW electrolysis plant that will produce green hydrogen, together with storage space, a compression facility, and a filling station. Also, there is a chance to increase the installation’s capacity up to 5 MW.
Green energy
The North Sea Port in Zelzate’s Terranovasite on the Zonneberg will produce the green hydrogen using locally produced green energy. On the former landfill is already a huge solar farm. The process of converting the former brownfield into a hub for the production of green energy is still ongoing.
The position is also convenient to the Antwerp-Bruges and Lille-Rotterdam motorway intersections, the Ghent-Terneuzen channel, and the R4 ring road that surrounds the Port of Ghent.
Preliminary tasks
The Flemish government provided Terranova Hydrogen NV with strategic support in the amount of 4.33 million euros at the end of 2022 as a part of the implementation of the “Flemish Hydrogen Vision.” Meanwhile, Terranova NV began the site preparations after obtaining the necessary permits. The first hydrogen molecule will be created in the early 2025.
