Jordan is taking bold steps towards a sustainable energy future, with plans to enact laws governing green hydrogen projects as part of its national strategy.

This move aims to expand the use of renewable energy and establish Jordan as a significant player in the global green hydrogen market. With an ambitious target of 50% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030, Jordan is poised to make a significant impact on the transition to clean energy. In this article, we explore Jordan’s goals, the technology behind green hydrogen, its potential impact, and the challenges that lie ahead as the country embarks on this transformative journey.

Having already approved multiple solar and wind power projects, Jordan is well on its way to achieving its ambitious goal of incorporating renewables into its energy mix. With renewable energy accounting for nearly 29% of the energy mix by mid-2023, the country is showcasing its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing clean energy alternatives.

The Jordanian Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, led by Director of the Renewable Energy Fund, Rasmi Hamza, is spearheading the country’s green energy revolution. Recognizing the enormous potential of green hydrogen, the Ministry is actively exploring legal and organizational options to bolster the renewable energy sector. This includes formulating a comprehensive strategy for the production and export of green hydrogen, positioning Jordan as a key player in the global green energy landscape.

Green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy sources, primarily through the process of electrolysis, where water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity from renewable sources like solar and wind. This produces hydrogen without any carbon emissions, making it a clean and sustainable alternative to conventional hydrogen production methods.

By embracing green hydrogen, Jordan aims to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and bolster its energy security. Additionally, the production and export of green hydrogen could pave the way for new economic opportunities and establish Jordan as a regional and global leader in renewable energy technologies.

Jordan’s ambitious plans to enact laws governing green hydrogen projects and expand its renewable energy capacity signal a bright and sustainable future for the nation. By embracing green hydrogen, Jordan can significantly reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to global efforts in combating climate change. As the country works towards achieving its renewable energy targets, it paves the way for a greener and more sustainable world.
