Wind and hydrogen energy will be the focus of Mercury Renewables’ €200 million investment, which is aimed at getting the project up and running by 2025 at the latest.
For the purpose of producing hydrogen gas for heavy vehicles, the company plans to build a wind farm in Firlough, Co Mayo, which will generate enough power to power 45,000 homes.
Mercury estimates that when the project is completed in early 2025, it will cost €200 million and create 20 full-time jobs.
Hydrogen will be produced by Mercury using wind farm electricity. Using 75 megawatts of power, the plant can supply up to 45,000 households.
This would result in a yearly reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 65,000 metric tons because Mercury believes that it could produce enough hydrogen to power 1,000 heavy-duty vehicles
