Emerging developments in renewable energy have shaped a new milestone as Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) embarked on the world’s inaugural offshore hydrogen production and delivery.
Achieved using the demonstration vessel Winz Maru, MOL’s project underscores Japan’s ambition to spearhead green hydrogen technologies.
MOL’s ambitious Wind Hunter Project, aimed at establishing a robust green hydrogen supply chain, is vital to the country’s decarbonization strategies. The Winz Maru capable of extracting hydrogen from seawater and converting it efficiently into methylcyclohexane (MCH), highlights the practicality of these advancements. The transformation of produced hydrogen into MCH surmounts significant logistical challenges, offering a safer and more effective means to transport hydrogen to Tokyo Bay.
Analyzing the underlying technology, the Winz Maru stands out as a wind-powered vessel equipped with onboard facilities to harness underwater turbines for electricity generation—a dual-purpose innovation that positions the vessel as a versatile asset in hydrogen production. This aligns with MOL’s strategy to expand production, targeting an output of around 100 cubic meters of MCH by 2025.
