MOL Group has launched a green hydrogen production plant in Százhalombatta, Hungary. With a capacity of 10 megawatts, the facility is one of the largest of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe.
The €22 million venture will play a crucial role in driving sustainable fuel production while lowering carbon dioxide emissions of the Danube Refinery by 25,000 tonnes.
Producing approximately 1,600 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum, the plant will replace one-sixth of the MOL Group’s carbon-dioxide-emitting natural gas operations. Set to begin production in 2024, the green hydrogen will primarily support fuel production within MOL’s network.
The plant utilizes renewable energy-powered electrolysis equipment provided by Plug Power. The eco-friendly process disintegrates water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, leaving no polluting by-products. Each tonne of hydrogen production yields 8-9 tonnes of pure oxygen.
József Molnár, MOL Group CEO, explained the importance of green hydrogen production during the plant’s launch. This technology will not only reduce emissions equivalent to taking approximately 5,500 cars off the road but will also provide solutions for industry-wide and hydrogen mobility. MOL Group plans to deploy this technology in other fuel production units to further enhance sustainability across all of its refineries.
