The Open Hydrogen Initiative (OHI) has introduced a groundbreaking open-source toolkit, aiming to revolutionize the measurement of carbon intensity in hydrogen production.

Developed by GTI Energy and S&P Global Co Commodity Insights in collaboration with industry, academia, and scientific experts worldwide, this initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing transparency in the environmental impact of hydrogen production.

This “first-of-its-kind” toolkit offers a comprehensive assessment of carbon intensity, drawing from insights gleaned from 13 industry projects and encompassing over 200 technologies across 270 countries. With detailed analyses and open-access availability, it stands as the most extensive open-source hydrogen life cycle assessment toolkit in existence, providing invaluable data for stakeholders across the hydrogen value chain.

Paula Grant, President, and CEO of GTI, emphasized the toolkit’s role in providing transparent and auditable emissions accounting. By facilitating a deeper understanding of the trade-offs between cost and environmental impact, the OHI toolkit empowers companies and governments to make informed decisions regarding hydrogen production strategies.

According to forecasts by S&P, global hydrogen supply is projected to surge by 170% by 2050, underscoring the growing significance of decarbonization efforts. Alan Hayes, Head of Energy Transition Pricing and Market Data at S&P, highlighted the toolkit’s role in assessing commodities’ decarbonization potential, enabling markets to transition towards a low-carbon economy effectively.

As the global energy landscape undergoes a profound transformation, initiatives like the Open Hydrogen Initiative play a crucial role in driving innovation and fostering collaboration. By providing access to vital tools and data, this toolkit lays the groundwork for a more sustainable and transparent hydrogen economy, paving the way for a greener future.
