Provaris Energy, a pioneer in integrated green hydrogen projects, is making significant strides in advancing green hydrogen production and export supply projects in Australia and Norway.

The company’s innovative approach and strategic partnerships are poised to play a key role in achieving the European Union’s 2030 green hydrogen target. This article explores Provaris’ goals, technology, potential impact, and the challenges it faces in realizing its vision of a sustainable hydrogen future.

Established in 2017 with a focus on compressed natural gas solutions, Provaris Energy has quickly evolved into a leading player in the green hydrogen space. Recognizing the immense potential of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier, the company shifted its focus to hydrogen projects in 2021. Provaris received Approval in Principle (AIP) on two proprietary compressed hydrogen carriers, setting the stage for its green hydrogen endeavors.

Provaris Energy is actively developing integrated hydrogen projects in Australia and Norway, strategically positioning them within bulk-scale shipping range (1,000 to 3,000 nautical miles). The company is making significant progress in its prototype tank testing program for the H2Neo compressed gas hydrogen carrier and H2Leo floating storage solution. By collaborating with Norwegian-based Prodtex AS and SINTEF, Provaris aims to secure ABS and DNV certifications for the H2Neo carrier in early 2024. This milestone will lay the foundation for a full-scale production line in Norway, fostering a cash flow generating business by 2025.

Partnering with Norwegian Hydrogen AS, Provaris is playing a key role in the 270 MW FjordH2 hydrogen project in Norway’s Ålesund municipality. The project is poised to become a major production facility for green hydrogen in the Nordic region, with an annual capacity of 40,000 tonnes by 2030. This ambitious initiative aligns with the European Union’s REPowerEU Plan, which emphasizes diversified sources of clean energy in response to energy supply disruptions.

Collaborating with Gen2 Energy AS, Provaris is working towards developing a large-scale hydrogen supply chain across Europe. Together, they are conducting a comprehensive Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) to determine the viability of producing and supplying compressed green hydrogen from Åfjord to European ports, leveraging Provaris’ marine storage and shipping solutions. By capitalizing on Åfjord’s renewable energy access and existing infrastructure, this partnership aims to contribute significantly to Europe’s green hydrogen supply.

Provaris is also driving progress on the Tiwi H2 green hydrogen export project in Australia’s Northern Territory. With a proposed solar farm and transmission system, the project has the potential to deliver an impressive 90,000 tonnes of hydrogen per annum. Provaris’ innovative approach and design optimization are critical factors in unlocking Australia’s green hydrogen export potential.

Provaris Energy’s commitment to advancing green hydrogen projects in Australia and Norway reflects its dedication to a sustainable energy future. By forging strategic partnerships and leveraging innovative technologies, the company is making significant contributions to the global green hydrogen transition. As the world seeks to decarbonize and embrace clean energy solutions, Provaris’ endeavors hold promise in reshaping the landscape of green hydrogen production and supply.
